Default Gray interiors, the definitive explanation

I think after some reaserch and help from fellow Rennlisters and seeing a pair of Rubicon gray interiors up close yesterday, we can put the "gray interiors" topic to bed. Here are the quick synopsis:

There are 3 different gray color interiors on 993s:
- Marble Gray
- Rubicon Gray
- Classic Gray.

1. Marble Gray:
Very light silver color. Seats, shifter, center console, e-brake are silver, steerig wheel is black (or the color of the dash if dash is not black).

2. Rubicon Gray:
Medium gray color with brownish or purple hue, depending on sunlight. Seats, shifter, center console, e-brake, steerig wheel are all gray.

3. Classic Gray:
Slightly darker gray color. Seats, shifter, center console, e-brake, steerig wheel are all gray.

If someone has any additional info or corrections, please let me know.

colors sound right Mike.

but the matter of the dash etc. being gray or black was determined by checking off the option box when the car was ordered/made, not by the shade of gray.

i am not sure of the proper terminology, but "dash in deviating color", "carpet in deviating color" come to mind

OK, we'll take the dash and carpet out of description so not to add confusion. I was more intersted in steerig wheel and shifter color, and I think we got that mostly solved.

i am not sure about the shifter and e-brake handle, but the steering wheel could be either black or interior color as well.

Max, which gray are you referring to above? From what I've seen so far, marble grays have non-gray steering wheels, the other grays have gray steering wheels.

ok...just looked in the PET....the only gray steering wheel available was classic gray.
from that i would assume that marble gray or rubicon gray interior cars had to come with a black steering wheel; and classic gray cars could come with a gray wheel or a black wheel depending on how it was ordered

does anyone out there have a rubicon grey or marble gray steering wheel/airbag that would blow my theory ??

Eric86Red911,
Your interior looks Classic Gray (like mine), do you also have matching floormats? Mine are original but the color doesn't match the carpeting. My wife just bought me new mats from the Dealer but I haven't put them in yet since I've been busy. When I opened the box they didn't strike me to be as plush as my current ones (a bit on the thin side).

Max, I have a Rubicon gray steering wheel currenly sitting in my spare bedroom. It is _definitely_ Rubicon gray.
John D. also have a Rubicon gray stering wheel. Unless we are both confusing Rubicon Gray and Classic Gray.

take a look at your steering wheel Mike, there should be a three digit alpha numeric color code following the part number. "6XL" is classic gray.

Do I have to take the airbag off to do it? I looked already but did not see the number.

i don't have my old four spoker handy, but IIRC the number is under the airbag, embossed into the rubbery part of the wheel.

OK, the p/n on the wheel under the bag is 993 347 804 55 with no letters. The other side of innner steering wheel has numbers 844. A matching brake lever and shifter from the same C4 don't have any color code on them either.
Strange, strange, strange.
But all 3 pieces match John D's interior color and John says that his car is Rubicon gray.

My original mats turned kind of greenish, and needed replacing. Event he local dealer told me not to buy the current factory mats, as they were crappy. I bought replacements with the word 993 embroidered on from Gabe at Strasse. They are made by the same firm that made the original mats and are a perfect match for the classic grey in the car.
