Question ship or drive? (and extended driving Q)

As usual, Mr. Indecision here would like some feedback on whether to ship or drive my car for my big move from California to Canada. If you were me, and if you assume that your time isn't an issue, would you rather:

1) Drive your 993 1500 miles, incurring wear and tear on the vehicle (engine, tires etc) and wear and tear on you. (putting up with 2 - 12 hr drives ... although part of me would like a nice long drive too..)

or

2) Pay someone $2K to ship it in an enclosed truck for you? (2k seems to be the best quote I can get)

I can't make up my mind. Voting is enabled, comments encouraged!

PS
Also, and this may seem like a really stupid question to some of you (especially for those guys who race) but would 2 - 12hr drives be particularly hard on any of the components of the 993? I mention this because eons ago my brother used to own an air cooled 914, and he said on a long drive (with lots of hills) it almost overheated... I know, a 914 and 993 are apples and oranges.. but...

I have driven mine more than 12 hours a day and in fact it ran slightly cooler than normal when cruising at high speed and low revs.

Just keep an eye on your oil. You can burn a lot over 1500 miles.

As for the main question, yes I would turn it into a roadtrip of a lifetime if you could. Stop along the way at everything you ever wanted to see. If you don't want to do the driving, I'll do it for you! Can't be fairer than that

Do you have five or more days to see the country? If so, I think a leisurely drive in a 993 could be very exciting. But if the stress of changing homes is too much, maybe shipping the car would let you get on with moving and unpacking.

i did Edmonton to LA in less than two full days.....the 993 has more stamina than you or I !!

I shipped my car to Edmonton from Toronto with Searail (train) very good price and quick too. they don't ship interstate, but do ship back and forth from the US to Canada.
Here is their website: http://www.searail.ca/ You will the "snowbird specials" on the main page. N. CA to Vancouver for $1095 . i am sure that is CDN$.
I am not sure your destination city. I would suggest taking it directly to the rail siding yourself, and picking it up at the railsiding as well. They will deliver to other towns and cities as well, but that entails a car-hauler semi. that translates to more $$ and Cletus the truck driver loading and unloading your car an extra time.

good luck,

max

Drive it. When I picked up my 964, I flew out with a friend from LA to New York on a Friday night. Picked the car up at 10A on Saturday morning, and arrived in LA at 2A Monday morning. An amazing experience seeing the country in such a compressed period of time. We drove through 11 states. I still have vivid memories of evening thunderstorms in Illinois and passing the arch in St. Louis.

Just make sure your CD player works...

Drive it and take highway 1 from SF to the coast of Oregon. Probably THE most memorable drive of my life... make sure you start early in the morning to enjoy the drive... simply majestic!

Did 1900 miles in 5 days out to Havre MO from Seattle. Some of it was at very high speed and we took the scenic route up north with some nice twisties. Saw Glacier Ntl Park and some beautiful parts of America.

Could have taken more time but still we remember it fondly. My wife discovered she likes to drive fast!

I got one for you..

...did a buy-it-now on a 95 993 with 90k miles sight unseen (except for the photos on ebay)... flew out from chicago the friday after thanksgiving and drove it home 2200 miles in 3 days (got home sunday afternoon around 3pm)

..would do it again in a heatbeat!!!

...car now has 94K miles and is being set up for the track car! ..993s LOVE to be driven!!!

...the car actually felt better AFTER the trip then at the start of it because it was sitting parked in Marina Del Ray for 5 months!!!

My vote: DRIVE IT!! Enjoy the ride!!!

Couple years ago I drove to Eugene OR, picked up a friend, drove to Vancouver, then across BC to Lake Louise and home via Montana. Inside piled to the ceiling with camping gear. About 3600 miles in 5 days. The ship it or drive it cost seems to be a wash, so I go with viperbob's wisdom.

wow.
15 to zip so far... I thought "drive it" would win, but not that overwhelmingly.

I gotta admit, I'm starting to think of what I can do to the car with the $1000 or so saved by not shipping it.

My only worry is a freak snowstorm in mid April wreaking havoc with my Potenza S02A summer tires... ending up in the ditch wouldn't be fun!

I'm not sure I understand the question. I picked up my 112K miles cab in San Francisco in January and drove it 4500 miles all over the country back to Boston in 2 weeks (stopping and enjoying things along the way). To me, this is a big part of owning the car - driving it. Wait, that's the only part.

I would drive! I have driven the coast highway a number of times and it's fantastic! You probably would not see snow unless you are ending up in my part of the woods! Snowing outside as I write. Vancouver, however is another story as the blossoms have been out for weeks!

Either way, welcome to the North!
Rob
