Default Motor Sound Package

Hey guys,

What does the Motor Sound Package (MSP) consist of? Does it add any value as far as throatier sound or performance over one w/o it? Is it similar to the PSE that is available on 996s? If not, do they offer a factory sport exhaust?

I seems like 90% of 993s have it and for ~$300 why not, right? I'm sure there's added benefit, just not sure what.

Thanks fellow Porschephiles!

For Europe it consisted of different mufflers which gave a throatier sound, a motor sound airbox cover and differnt exhaust tips. There was no increase in HP, just a better sound. I wouldn't think that 90% of 993s had it as a factory installed option. I would say it was more like 20%.

i have the factory motor sound package..

in my case, it is different mufflers, different airbox, chrome tips and better sound (nothing for HP however)... just louder/more throaty.. difficult to explain..

..but when I was test driving, I feel in love with the sound of the 'motor sound package' ...my folks just didn't understand why I had to pay extra for more noise.. LOL

Oh...don't get me wrong...I wasn't speaking for statistical data, just seems to me most the ones that I see for sale have the MSP option.

So, it sounds like it's very similar to the 996 PSEs, but w/o an upgraded exhaust?

The full MS option, as ceboyd said, includes different (reprtedly less restrictive) mufflers, chromed (plastic) intake drilled airbox & different tips. No advertised HP increase. IMO, a nicer sound. Just the airbox was also available. The effect of the drilled airbox can be achieved by drilling holes in the oem box.

I've seen many cars advertised as having MS, with either a homemade drilled box or just the MS box, rather than the full package.

I have full MS & am content w/it. If I didn't, I'd drill the box & install Robin's RSR mufflers which I think sound a bit better than mine.

It's the other way around. The M159 mufflers were only available on North American cars.

I bought the MS airbox and chromed exhaust tips and this really improved the sound compared to the stock sound. When I switched to RSR mufflers this dramatically changed the sound. I

At an Autocross session last year in Chicago, I compared my cars sound with another 993 with RSR mufflers and no MS package and my car was throatier and just sounded better.

Find a set or RSRs and drill some holes in your airbox. If you don't want to I have an old airbox cover laying around you can have.

Just curious since Robin and his RSR's were mentioned on this thread, does anyone know how he is doing! Hope he is doing ok or at least as much that can be expected.

Sorry, Arrwin, don't mean to hi-jack the thread.

Thanks
Rob

My targa also has the different mufflers, different airbox, chrome tips and better sound. But I really couldn't tell the difference until higher RPM on the freeway. I think for the price, it's a good deal!
