Chris, I currently own an E36 M3 and the 993.
If this was your first "911" like it was for me the brakes especially are completely different from any other car. The pedal is hard and does need pressure. At first I had the same feeling that there was something wrong but it was nothing. When I got used to them every other car was overboosted for me. Also do not forget that just with the engine behind you the feeling while braking is completely different than any other front engine car just because of the weight location.
As for the steering I do not really have any major dead spots you might want to check this one out.
Comparing my stock M3 with my 993 I find the 993 more responsive and more communicative. While I love my M3 she is not a raw as the 993 and I call her "my Caddilac" as she is more comfortable as a GT and if I have to drive to town she is the choise. The M3 for me is the softest I can have in a car and truly she is wonderfull but not as communicative as the 993 or my previous P Cars for that matter.
I agree with you on the "bloated" statement for the new M3. A friend of mine has one and besides the obvious wonderfull motor I was not impressed and I always felt I was driving a bigger car.
If you can afford having both and money to spare the combo is great. Just 'upgrade" your 993 with safety equipment ang get out on a DE to fully enoy the precise and quicker turn in, the amazing brakes and the hair raising flat 6 singing at full song behind your back.

One more opinion......

I specifically check my C4S steering today, and if there's a dead spot it's too insignificant for me to observe. Perhaps your alignment is off - to much toe in.

As for the brakes, any 993 has great brakes, and with the Big Red Brembos on a C4S it's as close to an arrester wire ****** on an aircaft carrier you can get when you have to lose speed. It amazes me how much punishment (135+ to40 mph approaching turn 5 at Road America)these brakes can take. It's as if "the hand of God" reached down and slowed the car.

Get thee to a DE and enjoy yourself.
