Default the passion of the porsche

another newb saying Hello.

Just wanted to thank this forum for the wealth of information shared.
I've been reading for quite some time. The feedback from the members has convinced me that I will be getting a 993 some time in the near future; hopefully by years end.
The other night I was asking myself why I want a Porsche, specifically a 993, so badly. I've never driven one or even been a passenger in one.
Then I came across this thread:
"Why the passion for Porsche? I don't Get It!!"
I realized then that as a kid I was once taken on a spirited joy ride by an uncle in a late 60's 911; I was 11. The sound, acceleration, and cornering left an impression in me that has ingrained itself into my subconscious mind forever.

p-car.com (Robin's site ? is also an awesome resource)

I would venture to guess that all of us had the same feelings as a kid and now own one of the coolest cars around.

Good luck in your quest !

The only feeling I had as a kid was running all-out down a twisty heally road to catch a bright yellow and red mid-50s built street car rumbling around the turn. You couldn't see it, but you could sure hear it well. You'd catch it, jump in and resume normal breathing as it would continue its journey in a cacophony of metal screatching sounds and 0.25g side loads.
Hmmm... that might explain why I'm mostly oblivious to rattles in my cars today.

First time I've seen a Porsche was on a poster way back when. Never riden one, but I knew that its my dream car. I never stopped dreaming...
until I got my very first one in July of last year. I still can't believe that I have one of the best engineered sports car.

Good luck in getting your's.

The 993 I bought last year was the first Porsche that I had ever been in, much less driven. Knew I'd love it and I was right!

I always tell people when looking at various high-end sports cars that IF you have just always loved 911's with a passion for numerous inexplicable reasons, then it is the car for you. If you like high performance cars in general and are weighing a 911 against a Corvette, M3, what have you, WITHOUT a predisposed passion for a 911 - DON'T GET IT!!! You'd be one of those people coming back in a month saying "I don't get the hype." For the rest of us, that "hype" is the best kept secret in the world.

My wife would roll her eyes when I'd start talking about Porsches - until she drove ours for the first time - now she's as hooked as I am !

My brother in law started begging his wife for a 993 after he took mine out for a spin ('look, honey - it's got room for the kids')

Do I get bonus points for converting unbelievers?

The PCA has a slogan that says "It's the People." It sounds trite, but it is really true.

The cars are fantastic, I am on my 3rd one - a '86 coupe, a '85 Turbolook, and now a C2S, but the Porsche community is truly amazing. You are getting a taste of that here on this Forum, but just wait until you meet some owners in person. We have friends all over that we met through Porsche activities.

I remember the first night I had my 930. I let my wife (girlfriend then) drive it on the highway 13 going towards Berkeley from Oakland. We were doing 120 before she knew it and she said "Wow, now this is a Porsche". I had just sold my SC so she was comparing the two. I'm glad she gets it as she is, at the very least, tolerant of me wanting to spend some money on it.

I remember my first ride on a 1976 911. I was just 15 yo, and my neighbor bought a salvaged one and was working on rebuilding the engine. All the kids on the block would sit around his garage while he told the story of the Porsche, its engineering, suspension and the famous Autobahn. When I bought my first 911 few years ago, I called him, bought him a first class ticket to Orange Country, CA so we can ride in the 911 together again.. except this time, I drove!!

The trip to visit the Official Moonshine Supplier and the Mother Superior and best Porsche garage int he state of Arkansas was the highlight of our trip from New Orleans to Little Rock! Sorry we missed seeing the new car when you came out for the Dunkel's Meet. Guess we'll just have to drop in again!

Around 1972 (12 years old) I snuck into a Can-am race that had Porsche 917's racing, and watched Mark Donahue dominate the field. The sounds of the Porsche cars racing around the track were forever engrained. In 1976 I read a Motor Trend Magazine that had the "new" 911 Turbo and from that day on I said I would own a Porsche one day! 27 years later and here I am with a Porsche. When I am driving, I still can hear that high pitched whine from 1972.

I have been lucky to drive lots of different Boxster and one 911. It was a red '79 SC Targa. That car was tighter and handled better then my new A4. I was amazed by that car. That was two years ago and I still kick myself today for not buying it. My search still continues. One day I'll own one.
