Post Motor Sound Option/RSR Mufflers

Just wanted to check....how can I tell if I have Motorsound mufflers? I certainly have the drilled aixbox (was pointed out to me at a meet a couple of weeks ago).

The reason I ask is that from reading the reports from people who have Robins RSR's I would like to consider changing mine. Would it be worthwhile if I already have the Motorsound mufflers

Also, the exhaust tips I have are nothing like those on Gerts site, well not as shiney anyway! Is it possible to use these with the RSR mufflers?

Thanks,

If your car was sold outside the US, you don't have the M159 mufflers. They were only installed on North American bound cars. That is, of course, if the previous owner didn't install them after the fact.

Excellent, thanks for the quick response guys.

Viken, my car is a UK version...I'll try and see if I can find any of the part numbers shown below.

Kim, as Gert/Robin work an exhange policy did you get modified motorsound mufflers or modified standard ones when you purchased them?

Its seems that for the price its well worth doing and if I can get the chromed tips at the same time - all the better.

Thanks again,

I originally received a set of RSR'd "stock" mufflers from Robin. I then sent my factory motorsound mufflers to Robin for modification, there was a slight difference in sound (the motorsound louder). Mentally I am happier that I got my original motorsound's modified, but then again, I seem to suffer from that same problem of **** retentiveness that others on this board seem to contend with.

Kim, like you I spent way too much time trying to get the tips properly aligned, and just when I think I have them even I adjust them again

Kim, I thought for sure you'd have the "CHP 11-99" frame.

Kim, that brings up a question in my mind. I had a set of Motorsounds (Gillet) sent to Robin to work his magic on, and Robert Henriksen commented that mine were actually noticeably quieter than his RSR's. I wonder what the differences may be compared to a non-Motorsound muffler.

You know, I'd thought about that, and would like to try an experiment next time we get together -- have you start one car while I stand outside & listen. Pull away, drive by, etc. Then repeat w. the other car.

I can do the driving on both for your ears as well, to make sure I'm not imagining things.

It'd be good for my piece of mind - make sure I'm not imagining this!

I have motorsound. The RSR was the first mod I wanted for the car. I picked up in Atlanta about 2 months ago and would have had it put on by the place that did my PPI but Robin did not have any cores. Well, I just got home from a mini-vacation and Robin left me a message that he has a core ready and will ship this week. I'll let everyone know what happens re:changing out motorsound muffler. The burble that I currently enjoy getting even better...I can't wait.

Kim,

As far as all of the testing I have done I can't find a sound difference between a RSR muffler made with a standard core and a motor sound core. I've even had each one of them installed on either side of the same car and can't hear a difference.

Few people on the board have also done some comparison and can't seem to be able to tell the difference.

With that said I do notice the sound is slightly different from car to car, and it is not because of the muffler. I believe each car's DME have a different fuel map adjuted to the driver's driving style, gasoline, and other parameters, and since the fuel map is slightly different between these cars the exhaust sound will also be differe. For sure the 95 993 without varioram system with the RSR muffler sounds different from 96+ 993s with varioram. (Some say the 96+ sounds better sme say the 95s sound better) Also the RSR muffler sound will change slightly after the initial installation which I believe has to do with the DME learning the new fuel map, since now the muffler is now less restrictive.

Hope that answered your question.

Robin, When you are finished working your magic on them, are the RSRs made from the standard and the motorsport cores physically the same, inside and out? Thanks, Bill Z

ps Either way, mine sound great and continue to improve

Absolutely! No two identical cars sound the same. This is especially true of older (pre-9x6) Porsche's.

Question

Robin,
You mention: [quote] The RSR muffler sound will change slightly after the initial installation which I believe has to do with the DME learning the new fuel map, since now the muffler is now less restrictive.

I have seen mention that the RSR mufflers get better with age. Is that the reason or does something physicaly happen inside the mufflers?
