I'm very happy I chose a Tip. Nothing to do with shift profiles, but the biggest improvement in shift smoothness I experienced was from changing my 23 year old engine mounts. Remarkable difference: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...wners-too.html

What would people be willing to pay for something like, "Permits Driver To Hold Transmission In Gear In "Tip" Mode – Transmission Will Not Override Driver" ?

One of my favorite Tip videos. I think this guy definitely got his transmission into stage 5. Love the hands on wheel up shifts at max rpm! (pay no attention to the cover shot - it's not just a FS ad.)

There may be potential here for anyone serious about this topic. It took me a while to re-locate the link but I ran across this company right after I bought my Tip. The interesting thing is that they make a version for our transmissions, (as installed in Land Rovers and BMW's.) I was going to contact them to see if it could be adapted but lost steam. In any case, it looks like solidly engineered kit and it would be interesting to see if this might work on our cars.

EDIT: On further examination of the website - they only fit what they call "late" ZF-4PH22 versions. May not be the same as ours afterall.

hogged, thanks for posting this. However, I read section 37 and didn't see much in the way of guidance. I did see a pic of the kick down position and noted that. I'll be in my car tomorrow and will investigate further.

I will say a big thanks for the post tho. lots of good info on other 993 subjects. Bookmarked.

I also looked at compushift.
Our gearbox doesn’t have the port to connect the wiring to. Spoke to the dealer in Aus about this.

that company did offer modified valve body to make shifts faster. From some reviews it’s a brutal shift. Will ruin the drivability to some degree.

they would have to take your stock valve body and machine it. So no going back to stock unless we can find spares.

if someone could machine one to work well that would be good.

other items would be better cooling. Larger oil pan, etc. But only needed when adding much more power.

a guy on YouTube who mods mercs did a valve body upgrade with interesting results.
legitstreetcars. Check it out. He tests two type of valve bodies.

Ya, probably not guidance. But it does describe how the transmission programming works. I thought pages 37-56 to 37-61 explained it all.

I notice this all the time - but then it goes back into standard mode after a session of driving.

With paddles the tip becomes more engaging to drive.
I use to use Lube-guard fluid but now use Mobil1 Dex6.
Shifting is great. Still trying to find time to change change out the stock/worn transmission mounts.

Other performance/strength things I have looked into are from Ashcroft Transmission in England.
The ZF4HP box is so popular with other cars - landrovers, bmw, etc. Internals can be changed for better strength.

Robert's America GS over on the 964 sticky threads has some special programing from Porsche.
If only we could get Robert to let us copy the ecu from the tip box. Perhaps we should all ask him nicely.

Here is a description of his transmission:
Transmission:

1. Tiptronic® Transmission – Blueprinted, Polished, Reinforced And Dynamometer Tested Race Version
2. High Performance Software For Tiptronic® Transmission Including:
a. Specially Programmed For Use With 3.8 Liter Engine
b. Permits Driver To Hold Transmission In Gear In "Tip" Mode – Transmission Will Not Override Driver
c. Higher Performance In Automatic Mode
d. Transmission "Learning" More Rapid In Automatic Mode
3. Torque Sensing Differential Mounted To Ring Gear With Specifically Made Stainless Steel Bolts
4. Carbon Fiber/Titanium Side Transmission/Differential Housing
5. Wire Electro-Discharge Machined 300M Transmission Output Flanges
6. Lightweight Flywheel
7. Titanium Transmission Linkage Brackets
8. Aluminum High Efficiency, Lightweight Transmission Oil Cooler
9. Goodridge G-Line XF –8 Hoses With Machined Aluminum AN Fittings From Transmission To Transmission Oil Cooler
10. 8 Aluminum Quick Disconnects Between Transmission And Transmission Oil Cooler
11. Titanium Transmission Fluid Fill Plug
12. Carbon Fiber Transmission Fluid Pan Including:
a. Titanium Banjo Level Indicator Fitting
b. Titanium Drain Plug
c. Aluminum Fasteners
13. Titanium Transmission Fasteners Throughout
14. Titanium Transmission Mounting Fasteners
15. Titanium Differential Fluid Fill Plug
16. Magnetized Aluminum Differential Fluid Drain Plug
I will find out today. I left the engine lid ajar after checking the oil level last week and you know the rest of the story. I went to crank it up yesterday and it was dead. So dead, the door would not unlock.(0% capacity and 1.2volts) Gave it a charge yesterday and will let you know.

Can we get more info on that?
- link to the thread
- ask Robert for more details on the program
- would it work on standard tip
- etc. etc.
sounds all to good to be true

All is well. With everything going on, I have never found more pleasure and solace in just taking the old girl out for a drive. My portfolio is sucking wind but daily driving the 993 is the ultimate social distancing. Stay well my friends.

Playing with automatics in other cars I found....
Adjusting kick down cable makes the car down shift sooner vs lugging engine mid throttle.
Early TC lockup bogs engine. Tap brake pedal to see if this is part of your gripe. If so reprogram to suit your needs. I like lockup based on speed and top gear only. Absent the ability to reprogram I’d run a switch to TCU (off brake switch line) to toggle lockup on freeway only.
In this application it would be great to have the ability to switch between programs manually. Check with Todd at Protomotive and see if he’s got any options for this. He’s a REALLY sharp guy who is up to the challenge.

A small tidbit for use around town. I’ve discovered that you can just put it in third gear and it will shift through all the gears 1 through 3 from a standing start to cruising around town. Most helpful when I have to let my wife drive it for a run around town. Can’t let her cruise at 30 mph in fourth gear, can I? I suppose I could do the same with second gear, but she would be uncomfortable with the car driving at 5K RPM.
