Can someone tell me the number/letter in the VIN which designates the model as a 993 "S" and also the position of the number/letter in the VIN (ie 1-17 position, 1 being the W). Thanks! Jim

I am going to go out on a limb and say that no such indication exists.
My '98 C2S VIN is WP0AA2992WS320XXX
where the X's are actually numbers but I have omitted them because they are not relevant to this discussion.

My knowledge is similar to others; have not heard of way to tell via VIN.
Option label on inside of trunk prob. should tell, but unsure. Wide-body option is M491. This is from the parts microfiche (go to www.my-porsche.com and buy your own - it's cheap!). However, mine is dated Jan 1996, so prob. doesn't cover later options.

I am going to take a shot at this, since the last 993 model year is 1998, and all 1998 coupes are made in the "S" widebody coupes format so that means all the VIN numbers starting "W99WS3" signifies that it is a 1998 model year, and if it is a coupe model then it must be the "S" widebody model. Unfortunately Porsche also made CABs and TARGAs in 1998, so that W99WS3 will also include them in there.
Check out the VIN number listing in my web site for all the 993s.

Hey, If the VIN doesn't tell if the car is an "S" body car than what if the car is insured and it gets stolen, the insurance company will calculate the fair market value based on a narrow bodied car which is less valuable? Should then, I call my insurance agent and make sure that they list "S" body car as an optional installed on the car so that I am properly covered? This doesn't sound right, I would think that they should be able to know exactly what you have based on the VIN?
