Default headlight cleaning

The headlight buckets on my 993 have a layer of dust inside. I am planning to take them off and clean them. I'm planning on a soapy water cleaning and a rinse. Are there any caveat's to be aware of? Don't want them to disintegrate.

Thanks.

Do not try to wipe or wash the reflector. It is covered by a very thin and fragile layer of silver/chrome, and will not stand up to any much more than just blowing any dust away.
A paper tissue will be way too hard and make scratches/damage. This is also the case for the reflector behind the low beam projector lens.
The low beam glass projector lens is probably due for a thorough rinse.
Cheers,
Tore

Like Tore says, do NOT touch the reflector or you'll be sorry.
For the other parts I won't use any water, just a clean, smaller moist MF towel with some glass cleaner.

If the lens is dirty beyond what can be blown off with a little compressed air I would test:
  • some photographic lens tissue with photographic lens cleaning fluid or
  • a dry microfiber towel made for cleaning eyeglasses or
  • spraying a little electronic cleaner on a microfiber towel made for cleaning eyeglasses
on an inconspicuous area of the reflector and see if it cleans without abrading the surface.

Thanks for the input. I know that the reflectors are very fragile. The plan is to wash with warm soapy waters, sloshing the liquid inside the bucket. A rinse with cold water and them I will put them in the oven at about 95F and let them dry without any touching of the fragile reflectors.

That's the plan and I'll post the results.

I bet it's possible to remove the headlight glass from the unit, is that what you plan to do or do you plan to fill the headlights with water like an aquarium?

Somewhat.....a cup or so of warm soapy water....slosh.....drain and an exterior dry. Then into the oven for complete drying. When I get it off the car, I'll look to see if the lens is removable. If so, I can use a spray bottle to direct the solution at the reflector.

Thanks for the input.

The lens is removable, you can buy replacement lenses if the one you have are worn! The previous owner of my car changed them at one point!

are the replacement lenses the same for factory HID bulbs? Mine are in terrible shape after being unprotected for ~80K miles and 23 years

If the lens on your headlight pod is original the hold-down clips are likly melted in position. One can use a mat knife to trim back the melted plastic so the clips can be released without damaging them. Also, when the cars were originally equipped there were several versions of the lens' originally for different markets. So if you purchase replacements make sure you get the correct ones.

Easy to figure out by looking up the part numbers in the Catalog.
There seem to be only two lenses in the USA catalog, one for left one for right, none specified for option 601 LItronic Lamps so the answer is Yes same for halogen & discharge lamps.
