Question Tiptronic “clunk”

My ’96 Targa Tip has recently developed a “cluck” in manual and ‘D’ modes. If I push down or pull off the gas too quickly the sound can be heard, does it in all gears but does not happen if speed is changed smoothly.

Anyone seen this before? Any help appreciated.

Is it a loud clunk or a soft low clunk.
Do you think it comes from the back or front.

Sounds like it's from the rear, not a loud noise, sounds a bit like someone hitting a wooden mallet against a 5mm thick steel plate....

Yes I have been getting that for a couple of years now.
Very occasional though. No idea what it is. Mechanic hasnt found out what it is either.

What I also noticed was that when someone sat in the back the clunking stopped.

Sorry I couldnt be of more help.
Let us know what you find out.

I dont think its suspension related. Mechanics said suspension was okay in last service.

I suppose it could be something loose/free around the transmission area.

..Just been for a blast, your right, when someone is in the back it doesn't happen as much.
Someone else has just said to me it may be wear/play in the drive shafts. I'll let the stealer have a look at it, but not sure when I'm going to have time to take it in.
Will post the answer if I find it.

Thanks.
