I'd go along with everything said...

You should take these cars to to the upper RPM band occasionally. A few years ago one of the very experienced techs at Stuttgart Southwest in Tempe stated that the fuel injectors don't fully open up until you're above 5000 RPM and the throttle full open.

On a different note, I once had a very high mileage (over 160,000 miles) Honda Prelude that one day started running like crap. Because of the high mileage I drove it sort of "gently" as it was my sole transport. The Honda mechanic who diagnosed the problem (something to do with the throttle body, I think, it was a long time ago) told me to quit babying it and bury the throttle every now and then, mileage be damned. My long term gentle driving was what caused the problem.

Didn't you just put a supercharger on your 993? And you are worried about running it to redline?

Lol no. the fuel injector is just an electrical solenoid, it doesn't half open. The amount of fuel delivered is a measure of how long the injector stays open.

Below 3500 it feels much like a Camry. I have to keep the rpms at 3500 at least to feel like I am driving a 993.

My wife drives the 993 from time to time and she always wants to shift at 2000 - 2500. Makes me crazy cuz she then says, 'I don't get what you like about this car, it feels just a regular car.'

Engine cold - I always shift below 3500 rpm
Engine hot - I always shift above 4000 rpm

Every time I get on the highway I take it to redline when catching up with traffic, as I’m a big fan of the Italian tune up. Not to mention how the car sounds up there. I absolutely love it

Even above 3500rpm, the performance is only equal to a modern 6 cyl camry.

It's certainly possible I've mis quoted him, it was a while ago. He was trying emphasize the importance of running up the RPM band and using full throttle occasionally.

until the engine is warmed up i shift between 3,500-4,000. Once warm I love to keep the rpms up around 5,000-6,000 (the engine doesn't come to life until after 4,000). Bringing it up to redline when i'm having fun

By definition, (when certain conditions are met), a limit is safe to approach but never exceed. Obviously more inertia results in more wear, but if Porsche built it to handle a certain amount of stress and clearly marked that limit on the most prominent gauge in the car. I bought a 993 because I expected it to be both challenging and rewarding to drive fast. While it is both those things, I never anticipated the sensory experience it provides. The wriggling steering wheel, rear biased weight shift, bulky “short throw” shifter from another era, the smell, spartan interior, solid Kerr-Thunk! of the doors closing. And that sound! It’s the best part. The banshee wail of an aircooled flat six approaching redline is simply not to be missed.

You should absolutely enjoy your car in whatever manner you prefer. But if your engine is warm, lubricated, and mechanically solid then the whole tach is yours to explore.

There’s an increased intensity to the intake howl in the car that’s only evident if you run it to 5800-5900 or so. That’s when the intake’s resonance chamber tuning flap opens. It’s unmistakable and addictive, but it goes by in a blink in 1st gear and pretty fast in 2nd. IMO it’s best enjoyed during a long uphill straightaway in 3rd or ideally 4th gear (on the autobahn is best) when you can keep the revs right in the rpm range where the resonance occurs/changes.

That sound is one of the major reasons I bought the car. Let it warm up first, but don’t miss the fun!!! The car was engineered for it!

Ha! Which is why I pretty much hold the pedal to the floor in 2nd and 3rd up to redline on every on ramp. Love the sound of the Fister IIIs as you hit 4500 to 6000 rpm....sweet!

I think 3k-5k is the sweet spot where the engine is happiest. So I shift around 5k, unless wringing it out, and try not to spend much time below 3k. Definitely don’t like to be at 2k or lower.
