Wheel & wheelwell cleaning & finishes

After cleaning the wheel wells on a 1996 & 1997 993 I think I can give you a couple of tips. I used Simply Green, 3m adhesive remover and gunk. I also used an assortment of stiff thin & thick brushes (flexible brushes work well). Just spray the cleaner on a 12"x12" and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then brush vigorously and then lightly spray off the removed dirt with a hose (I placed a sheet of plastic under the well to divert the water away from the car). Just keep repeating this process until the well becomes the color of the exterior of the car (it will eventually). I initially used a pressure washer but felt that it might do damage to the painted wheel well. Use the 3m adhesive remover on the very stubborn areas.
Good luck

You should've seen the slide I did on sunday & hear those supercups screamin'!
So yes, car runs (over 40k & counting), but thanks for the compliments!

Finn,
Holey Moley, how on earth do you keep your wheel well so sparkling clean? (even the hoses and tubes look brand new). What about the engine bay? I've tried sponging it down after every wash but it is no where close to yours.
I'm not going to be too ambitious but I'd like my wheel well and engine bay to be half as clean as yours. How can I achieve it. Tips anyone??

Thanks!
I guess if you never drive it in rain, salt, sand etc. parts stay looking like that... At least in this case, it has worked.
Wheel wells I cleaned with some engine cleaning stuff, brushes, water & some 'elbow grease' .
Have to admit, they weren't too bad to begin with, but they weren't clean either.
Engine was like that when I bought the car, now I just vipe it off with moist towel or something every time I wash the car, that way, it stays looking like that!
I suppose you can use that Gunk for both of these & some plastic cleaner for all those plastic parts inside the engine bay area but since the engine never was dirty I'm not sure which would work best there.
I'm planning to test that Gunk stuff (& simple green) in near future (there are still some dirty areas somewhere).
Kim, thanks!

Burning Brakes
FF,
There is something strange going on. It seems your car has either never had the cosmoline or it was removed by a previous owner. Look at the other photos of the strut posted on this thread. That waxy gunk on the caliper and the brake like and the strut body is present even on very low mileage cars. On low mileage cars it looks like a semi translucent brown color and on higher mileage cars it tends to get black with asphalt color. Yours does not have it. I wonder if this was a deletion on your car? If your car had it you would have known, but from your experience it seems all you had to remove was some road grime.

JC,
I'm pretty sure my car had it before I cleaned the wheel whells, they looked almost same as the wheel whell in first picture of this thread, just not as bad.
Also, under the engine, crankcase has this stuff, light brown color (it's not dirty at all, just like someone had painted it with oil or something like that), it's not everywhere but almost everywhere, I know that it's the cosmoline.
I removed all that stuff from wheelwhells & other parts around there because it was mixed with brake dust etc. and we all know that's not good to be there (very corrosive), so cosmoline wouldn't work (preventing rust) anymore, that's why I wanted to clean all that **** out.
Under the engine, it's not mixed with dirt and it is clean, so I didn't want to clean it off.

Guys: The stuff that is sprayed all over the bottom of our cars for transportation to the US by ship in not cosmoline. We all still call it by the original greasy stuff used many years ago. It is now some synthetic material that is an absolute bitch to get off. Cars delivered in Europe do not have this gunk. I don't know of any easy method to remove it except lots of elbow grease.

Skip,
Once you get all the cosmoline and dirt off the inside of your well wells and suspension it should look like new. My black car has mostly a gray protective coating with a little black overspray. Some cars I’ve seen have the entire well painted in body color (or protective coating the same color). When cleaning, be careful because you can go through the color very easily. Here’s a picture my rear well and an engine shot for Finn. Good luck and keep cleaning.

I have said it before, but you clean freaks are just plain nuts. And besides, I think all SY 95 cars came with black wheelwells and suspension parts...

You want to do it right? There is a guy in LA that will remove all traces of cosmoline from your car, the good news. The bad news, he keeps the car for 3 months and the cost is about $4,000. I guess there is a market for everything in LA! If you want this guys address...I can dig it up for you.
