Default Airbox Mods - Worth It?

Did a search and nothing's directly on point. Can anyone verify that a fabspeed/cut airbox actually produces additional hp?

TIA

I had a motor sound airbox cover. Bought a standard one and cut it out to just the frame. Some difference in the sound with the top down but no difference in seat of the pants hp. If it is there, it isn't much. I'd be interested if anyone has real info since I converted back to the motor sound cover.

If anybody has a fixed rear spoiler, I highly recommend adding the turbo's trumpet air intake (thanks Glen!). This draws cool air from just under rear grill. IMHO this much more likely to give a real HP gain (albeit minor) versus cutting the stock airbox to let in more hot air....

See Robin's write-up:

Why? AFAIK, you'll have more intake noise (maybe good), more hot air intake (not good) & less cash in your pocket (good for someone else).

I did a test about 12 months ago on the AMD (UK) rolling road. Stock airbox with K&N and the internal snorkel removed (how my car normally runs), modfied airbox with holes ala motorsport and modified air box with side missing ala cup airbox. All used the K&N and guess what..no difference. Not a surprise but as it cost me nothing I felt like doing it.

We did however recognise the hot air being pumped into the air box from the manual transmission vent pipe. We disconnected it and blanked the hole in the box and we got a small (not worth mentioning) increase in bhp but a noticable sharper throttle response on the rollers. We left it off and put a purchased a tiptronic blanking plug for the box to tidy it up.

Huffwood, this sounds interesting. What's the downside of disconnecting that snorkel? Doesn't it route clutch dust toward the air filter? What happens if I remove it?

It's tie wrapped away from the air box intake. I meant to put a small filter on it to stop dust getting into the engine bay but never got around to it. It's been disconnected for over a year with loads of track days being driven - no noticeable problems.

I bought, off ebay for $32, a standard airbox which the prior owner had cut open. I think it's like the Fabspeed one. It is definatley louder than with my motorsound airbox. I think the increase in sound is from the intake manifold. Here's a photo.

No difference in HP. It does sound better though.

Nota,
I've been very busy with a project. I'll try my best to get it out this weekend.

I agree with the rest. I love the sound but have not noticed any increase in power.
