Nels, I got the smog 3 weeks ago. $30 cash, I didn't ask any questions. However, this is the third smog check I've had done at this place in the last year and it has always been $30.

I just got mine done in Laguna Niguel at the Chevron dealer.
Its on the corner of Niguel and Crown Valley.
I can't remember how much, but it was less than $60.00
I drove the car less than a mile to get there and had no problems passing.
I know they didn't plug in any OBDII connector.
My car is a 96 tiptronic cabriolet.

I paid about $70 . Hadn't driven the car for 3 weeks before but I did take the advice of "Drive it like I stole it!" Passed with flying colors. Yeah!

I went through this about 2 weeks ago. My tailpipe readings were very low, but I failed on the OBD-2 readiness codes. I made an appointment with the smog referee station and they passed me. Total cost was $8

I'm currently having trouble with my '96 993TT. CEL was reset about 3 weeks and 500 miles ago. I've been to test station 3 times since CEL reset and each time OBD read five "Not Ready" codes. Independent and dealer (Beverly Hills Porsche) told me to drive it more, as needs more driving time after CEL reset. Still wouldn't reset the third time, so I took it to BH Porsche today, and the expert there said some of the 993s and other German cars simply won't work with the software used by the test machine, and I should take it to a Referee station, and they will pass it without the OBD, doing only the tailpipe test. (Why didn't they tell me that when I first inquired?) So that's my next stop. I think someone else posted here that they also had to take their car to a Referee station. Aparently Referee stations deal with problem cars, modified cars, etc. that won't pass the regular test.

Very frustrating.

Danny was careful when he opened the doors near anything, careful getting in and out of the car etc. He respected a nice car, in other words.

Make sure to get your car good and warm, dont shut it off upon arrival. heat is your friend, in this case...

I got the greatest visual off that reply. Can you see a big dually haulin a$$ down the street with the dyno daggling out back ! Priceless... Headline..."ViperBob vs. the SMOG dyno...details at 11..." Too bad those dynos are not big enough to haul down some serious torque!

Serously, with the two smogs I have gone through since the new dyno rules, the car was not strapped down at all, either time. Just rides the rollers. I have been waiting to read of an accident and see how the state repsonds. After all the dyno work I have done related to perf tuning, I cannot see how the state seriously expects to dyno millions of cars without an incident. Madness ! Rant off...
