Default dash mic???

I have what appears to be a small black microphone to the left of my Tach. I can't find anything in the owners manual about this. I have the CDR210 cd player with the 10 speaker set up, and no phone. Factory alarm.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I thought maybe it was part of the stereo system, to auto-adjust the volume to compensate for ambient noise, But I never hear any difference in the volume while driving.

Well it does look like a mike, but I beleive it is the temp sensor for the heat/ac system in the car. Remember you have a auto heat and A/C system and it has to sense the temp in the car - that's where it happens. Hope this helps. Happy Driving

Wasn't there an option for automatic volume control on "Hi-fi" sound system? I have the system, but no auto-volume. I _think_ that I read a mention of it somewhere.

Well that's not the "mike" I thought you were describing. I have the HiFi sound system with the auto volume control and my car does not have the piece you show in your picture - frankly it looks aftermarket to me. Maybe it is a mike for a phone system. Sorry - I'm out of ideas.

I have a mic in that same location though mine doesn't look like that. I ASSUME mine is for the car phone that came w/ the car. As suggested, might it be an aftermarket addition? I'm sure you would suprised if/when you start to go poking under/behind the dash and find out what else is back there.

That looks aftermarket -- some alarm systems have a mic in the car to detect the sound of broken glass... That's my best guess. (but even back in 1988 when I had one installed in another car the mic was much smaller than that).

Guys - The climate control temp sensor is on the control unit itself. I assume Darin's mike remains from an aftermarket installation of a cell phone. Ordinarily there is a hole at that position which is covered up by the vinyl/leather finish. There are a few other covered holes that can be felt around the instruments which some installers have used for switches, warning lights, etc. My car came w/a console mounted analog cell phone. I removed it & all that went along with it. Probably 5# of wires & stuff. My car is much faster now.

Speed dependent volume control is described on p29 of the CDR-210 manual. It does not work with a microphone.

My page 30 is I&R. This feature may have been added later.
