I just read that the Taycan S will have 761 hp. In today’s world with restrictive speed limits, dense traffic, ubiquitous radar traps, what is the sense in offering so much hp? Fine for a track car, but for the consumer? It sells for 240,000 US dollars here in Switzerland.

Same "more is better" philosophy has been guiding the automobile development since the start. This is nothing new; just the same thing in a different electric wrapper. No one "needed" a 400 horse 993 Turbo 20+ years ago, or a 500 horse Cobra back in the '60's either. None of this is about common sense; it's about ego, excess and emotion.

With cars, it's never been about why? It's always been about why not? The Earth is over in 100 years anyway; might as well have fun til they close the bar

Tesla made their name on their performance numbers as much as anything else That is the world the Taycan enters and it has to compete.

These cars are are extremely heavy and make little noise. What they can offer in the absence of any kind of visceral feedback is HP and thrust.

That kind of thing gets boring, however. The 993 is the anti-EV. It is the opposite of everything EVs represent.

I was debating to myself if I should put a deposit for the Taycan a year ago in August - I would have been the 20th or so on the local dealer list. But, I soon realized that the sub $80K version will not be available for some years. I am glad I put a deposit toward the e-tron instead, and have took delivery of the Edition-one since early May. The Taycan build configurator is active now at porsche.com a mildly loaded "Turbo" is close to $180K and the Turbo S can be configured to over $250K !

The 2spd ZF transmission is an interesting advancement.

^Me neither. How long will it be before society realizes how detrimental to the environment battery manufacture and disposal is? Not to mention the additional load on an already fragile power grid.

Yeah, because oil drilling and gas fracking was better for the environment?

Truth is, we broke the planet and it ain't coming back for hundreds of thousands of years and only after it gets rid of us humans. A few more decades of batteries will just add the filth and damage that drilling for oil and fracking have already done.

Enjoy the party, boys. Most of us over 50 won't be here for the coming environmental apocalypse anyway, and it's too late to turn things around, since we've done literally almost nothing since we found out about this crisis 30 years ago.

Good times are a-coming

We’ve actually known about human caused climate change for over a hundred years. It wasn’t until the space race that we developed the tech to quantify and track it.

To the original point...I ended up with a clock-it-with-a-sundial air cooled for this very reason. I get the allure of more more more (quicker and faster). Different strokes for different folks. Glad to see stuff like this being developed, but I’m a dinosaur in my tastes and like mechanical things to be mechanical. Even if very obsolete and inferior performance wise. When you add in the other motorists, LEO, critters, tourists, cyclists, walkers etc (did mention other motorists?) such performance levels make zero sense to me for a road vehicle. Others can make that decision for themselves.

Not sure “we” want to start using the science argument since the same people who claim science with climate change are the ones who can’t tell the difference between a boy and girl. Science!

Um, that's funny because I can tell the difference between genders and understand that there's a climate crisis.
