I have read the archives regarding this matter and was wondering if someone can confirm that this is the unit needed along with the actual remote to solve this issue?
I actually found this unit on ebay. I searched the archives for a way to add the factory keyless entry and I think this is the way to go. In the photo it shows a FCC# along with the frequency rating so I think this is the actual reciever. I hope that along with a transmitter(remote) it should work. I believe that this unit is under the passenger seat on models so equiped.
If someone has seen their unit or has first hand knowldge please let me know.
Brian
Brian, please keep us appraised of your progress. There are several of us who tried different things with varying success (I'm currently trying a simple aftermarket solution).
My biggest issue with that unit is that I don't think that the wiring is in the car to connect it to.
BTW, the Pet CD shows this part number as "control unit" only and the machine translation of the first line of words is "taxturned out go away-closes". Whatever that means :-) But it does sound like remote control brain.
It may be a bit more complicated. The unit (993.618.159.02) is listed as the DriveBlock ("anti-drive off") control unit for MY96 & 97. If so, it ties into the DME & is not just a keyless door opener. I don't think that unit and a remote transmitter alone will do the job.
I had my seats out this morning. That unit is located under the driver's seat next to the transmission tunnel. My car is a 1995 and my unit is exactly the same as yours.

I think, from what I've read here on the board, that WHEN in 1995 the car was manufactured has a lot to do with what came in the car. Better check the build dates of the cars before you start comparing apples and oranges.
apparently on the attached picture you see the parts related to keyless entry. As far as I understand it the keyless entry receiver is part of the drive block unit. The big question will be of course where to attach all the wires to and I assume that in cars without this feature the shown wirecable will not be present.
But then you will need of course also a the part that actually will unlock the door, can't find a picture of it, but I know that it is inside the door!
Seems that only the drive block unit is not going to help!
I had drive block on my 97' and it was a pain -- using your key to lock and unlock the car is a better process in my mind -- sometimes simpler is better.
Thanks for all the input.
I am the ultimate optimist so here is what I think....
I believe the drive block and the remote door "unlocker" are two separate entities. I believe the remote will work without the drive block.
I think with the correct transmitter (RK116 315 mHz) that this will be a viable solution.
Having said that here is where I believe where the problem will be: getting the transmitter and receiver to communicate.
I have read the DIY on Robins site to program the remote.
I am hoping that going through the motions with out entering "the code" will still allow the two to recognize each other.
If that doesn't work then I think another alternative would be to see if I could swap my box with a friends car who has this set up and have him program them and then reinstall them into mine.
What do you all think?
Programming remotes is usually not a difficult thing. If you grind allows you to still one of his remotes for testing, you're all set. If not, get a remote, programm it to your friend's car's code to make sure it's operational and that programming sequence works before you try to program it for yours. Will save you a lot of hair pulling (from experience with other German cars).

ALL the remotes must be programmed (reprogrammed) in the same session.
Other than the challenge of the project, I don't get why anyone would expend much effort or expense for the oem keyless entry. If I didn't have DriveBlock, I'd get a good, passive aftermarket keyless entry, alarm & immobilizer installed. The oem system is not the most user friendly. Just my $.02.

Ah, Dan, you're absolutely right. I keep forgetting how immobilizer works, even though I've programmed dozens of Audi remotes last year.
I also agree on the aftermarket solution, that's what I'm in the process of doing now.
Do you need a remote for this project. I have an extra one. I think it would be cool to have factory lock and unlock ffunction with a remote. I am lucky that my MY95 has the drive block option. I think it looks a bit silly to walk out to a car that cost 60k new and you have to fumble around with a key to get the door open. Let me know if you need a donor remote. I saw one picture that had two remotes in it so maybe you are all set.
