Default 993 Hybrid anybody?

Not affiliated with Vonnen but it this looks like a pretty interesting idea. I guess it's a spin off project from Chuck at Elephant racing. The price is insane though. $75,000 can buy you a lot of motor/car. Still, for those who can afford it, pretty innovative stuff!

I would love the extra 150hp and instant torque. I think that would make the NA 993 into something even more special.

For anyone who already owns a 993, it makes no sense. For an extra $75K, one could sell their 993 and get into a really nice 993 Turbo, with no Franken-Electric Porsche value killer, or better yet, build an amazing custom N/A motor.

Sounds interesting, but a whopping $75K for a measly 150 electric horses in a 993 doesn't do it for me, IMHO.

Great concept and execution but ridiculous costs and unknown battery weight (they only cite motor weight) makes this a looser in my book. Why hide battery weight?

No longer. I’m getting the car ready for sale this month.

I commend these guys for being pioneers. This hybrid thing is inevitably the future of the 911. I myself plan on one day removing my 3.6 and installing an electric drivetrain once gasoline cars are no longer road legal, so I can keep driving my 993.

Me too! But we cross that bridge when we come to it!

MarinS4, thank you for bringing this to our attention! We're quite proud of our low system weight of only 170 lbs (net) and it got accidentally dropped from the webpage during a recent update. We've updated the site with this now. http://vonnen.com/technology/#3

I think these guys were at Rennsport Reunion last year. The unit bolts in between tranny & engine and pushes the engine 1" back ( pretty impressive in itself)
But without regeneration its advantage only lasts a while and there is a weight penalty as mentioned.
im sure folk will come up with exciting implementations that enhance a particular usage but what I love obout my old car is it's ability to perform any time and all the time whatever road you're on.
its really hard to improve on what the 993 team put out .

IanM,
In most cars the tranny will move forward and the engine stays put.
The system absolutely recharges itself, using as much recaptured energy from braking as possible without upsetting the balance of the car (this varies with application). Folks who have tried it definitely feel that it will indeed perform "anytime and all the time whatever ROAD you're on". I emphasized road because on the street the amount of time you can spend at full throttle is very limited, and when you're not the system can regenerate.
We agree completely: improving on the 993 is no easy feat!
