Default Unlocking an airbag module

Has anybody successfully had a 996 airbag module unlocked so that it could be installed in a 993 and locked with a Hammer? I believe my 993 airbag module is bad. I have a couple of 996 modules from Ebay, but my Hammer will not recognize them. I believe they need to be unlocked from their previous owners VIN before the ECU will communicate with them. There are services out there that unlock or "reset to factory" airbag modules but I can't find any that have the software to unlock a 996 module. I am not talking about resetting or turning off an airbag light, etc, I am referring to unlocking the module.

Very complex question on so many levels, good luck with this:
Has anybody successfully had a 996 airbag module unlocked so that it could be installed in a 993 and locked with a Hammer?

The above statements assume some level of compatibility. Have you spoken to these folks :Airbag Systems or PORSCHE 993 996 AIRBAG MODULE REPAIR AND RESET

The hammer is not at all capable of communicating with a 996 part number airbag control unit. The hammer was discontinued in 1995, and replaced with the PST-2, which was compatible with the 1996 and later 993 cars that had the 996 airbag unit.

Cheers,

Tore

Yes, I received an email response from crash data.co.uk today and they said they can reset the VIN in a 996 airbag.

So...I am buying a 993 that has a 996 style three spoke steering wheel installed. Do I have to worry that the airbag won't work?

NO. It will deploy. From personal experience! BTW, the “opinions” expressed on RL that a glued on crest will be a projectile is untrue in my experience.

First thing i would do is find out what the problem really is.....it get's expense playing guessing games, especially when it comes to replacing control units......once the unit is locked, it's pretty much done unless you send out to someone that can unlock it....a porsche system ll tester can not unlock it....i don't know what year your car is, the hammer may read the very early car, 94,95 pre obdll.....if it's an obdll car, the hammer won't work.....good luck
