Ex 88 911 owner finally found 96 C4S for sale, questions:
I'll try not to ask any stupid questions that are already answered in the 993 faq, but don't hold it against me if I slip in a loser question. I just found a used Polar Silver/Black Leather C4S through a broker, 96, 53k mi (ouch), $45,900 FIRM that I'm basically about to buy if the PPI can a carfax checks out. Vin# is WPOAA29937534201 - don't suppose anyone can run one of these carfaxes for me?
One thing - it has hardly ANY options on it. No litronic, hi fi, supple (no big deal), alum gauges-shifter-emerg brake, no cool white face gauges, upgraded suspension, sport seats. It only has C02 cat converter (that's an option?-weird), M6B Floormats (I would hope so), P01 power seat package, and 445 wheel rim caps w/ Porsche Crest. It has lojac (isn't there a monthly fee for that service?) Basic bare bones car.
If I add the litronic ($2000 but is that PLUS labor?)and alum door sills-shifter-brake-white face gauges (is white face the way to go?),I'm guessing that's $3000 right there? I don't need the upgraded suspension, motorsound, supple leath, sport seats, etc. Won't be tracking it. Just driving to work and back and the occasional blowout up I-95 and around town.
It's a 1 owner, exc cond, no dings, dents, paintwork, panel replaced, in dash CD (sweet-I hate those changers in the trunk), w/ the 18" stock C4S wheels, 50% tread left on still unknown tires, . Is this a great buy? It's about 4 hours from my house and I'm dealing with Mr Kim Lewis at the Luxury Car Network. Yes, I've read the posts about them. They seem on the up and up. I am comfortable with them, though I have the actual owner's # that I found, and I REALLY just want to call him directly to get the total scoop on the car! Is this verboten?
I just sold my 88 911 Venetian Blue baby a week ago and didn't expect to find a C4S in my EXACT color choice and in a price point that I can afford so soon. It almost seems too good to be true. The higher miles intially scared me, but Silver Bullet assured me that most of these are 2nd and 3rd cars for some people which is why other ones I've seen are so low in miles, and also much higher in price! I needed a car at $48k or under, was hoping for lower miles, but this car seems quite nice.
Q's- Do ALL the C4S have LSD and ABD? I live in the northeast. I need LSD, right? Sorry if this is a stupid q, but my dealer didn't seem real knowledgable about anything other than the newest of 911's. Do all C4S's have keyless entry, cruise contol (I never use cruise in my 740i but it would be nice for very long trips if I ever take any) and a factory alarm? I NEED keyless entry so that would be an additional expense.
I owe all of you a HUGE thank you for all your help, especially Silver Bullet. She is a peach.
I'll let you know if I get it. Believe me you'll hear about it. I'll be whistling dixie if this works out.
Steve (how do I sleep while I'm going through this? Time to buy some Benedryl! ))

Sounds like a good deal.
I also bought my 993 TT from Kim. However my case was a little different I had a 91 Testarossa that I needed to sell first. he found a buyer for my car and got me a 96 993TT, 10k miles, black/grey and in mint condition. When I first started to look into trading my TR for a 993, I satrting talking to Premiere and RMS, but it seems like it would cost me my car and $10k to get into a 993TT or $7k plus my car to get into an S car. I found Kim and he got me a great car and was able to sell my car to a buyer looking for a 91 TR. I was able to keep my upgraded wheels off the TR and I sold them seperately. The whole deal cost me my car and $3k.

"especially Silver Bullet. She is a peach.
Kim is a He"
To Phil: I am now VERY embarrassed! Sorry, Kim. (Silver Bullet)
By the way, the broker just called back and I just found out that the 1 owner car is a non-smoking owner, has a little curb rash (can be buffed out I guess), has Brigestone 502's at about half-life, no track time, std suspension, keyless entry, no squeaking windshield, mobile 1, 30k and 45k mi services done (I would hope so!), and cruise control.
I gave Kim Lewis at Luxury Car Network (yes, I know HE is a man) $212 so Cherry Hill Porsche can do the PPI this Wed the 18th. He said a compression check isn't needed for a 993, just the older cars, and that it would be a waste of my money and even Porsche dealers don't recommend it. He also said that the car will go through all the stuff that it takes to certify a 911 as well, and they'll let me know if it needs anything to be brought up to that higher standard. If all goes well with that... we should be in business. Do I NEED a carfax?
Jumpingly excited,
Steve

A clean Carfax does NOT mean that the car has not been in an accident. You can only use Carfax to eliminate a car if it confirms an accident.
I would have a body shop check the car in addition to the mechanical PPI...better to find out now than later.

while looking for a 993, the p-car dealers that I spoke with regarding a compression test said the same thing "these cars have so many sensors that we would know if a cylinder was low on compression". I few times I had asked if they would put that in writing saying the compression is good? They all said NO!
I would insist on a compression test, not so much a leak down though.
It will help you sleep better at night.

Yes. ABD/LSD was standard on the AWD cars. BTW, the ABD is NOT a modern traction control systom & is low speed only.

If you mean for bad weather, the answer is although nice, far from essential. Of much more importance will be good snow/winter tires on a spare set of wheels. Much in the archives.

YES. Driveblock system (keyless entry, immobilizer & alarm) std. Never seen one w/o cruise.

The curb rash can probably be fixed. Done right it requires that the tire be dismounted & the wheel worked by someone decent. Figure $75-100 + mounting & balancing. Suggest you wait 'til you need tires. Tires that are 50% worn only have about 1/3 of their life left since the last 20-25% of tread is usually at the wear markers. Wet weather perfomance is greatly compromised before that. You should budget for tires within a few 1000 miles.

Agreed, although it was still optional equipment -- option code 454.

What is standard in the US and RoW is different.
For example, the cruise control is listed on the window sticker as standard equipment, but it will still be listed as an option on the white sticker in your trunk.

Here's my two cents:
Call the previous owner. Get the scoop. I know it's shocking, but some salesmen will lie to you. Or "not know" the answers to some questions.
Second: it's silly to spend $45,000 on a car and not invest $100 up-front to have it checked-out. I agree - have a body shop look over the car for any damage or repairs. In addition to the PPI.
Third: Assume the worse on the rash. I bought a set of wheels from a guy here on Rennlist, one wheel with curb rash. I knew about it up front, but figure I could get it fixed. WRONG. It was bent. I had to buy a new wheel. My bargain just went flying out the window.
Fourth: I wouldn't worry about the options. You're buying the car to drive, not to resell. Enjoy it. It will have remote keyless entry, pseudo-alarm and cruise and CD, so be happy!!
