Arrow Idea from 996 tt guys-How old where You?

<img border="0" alt="[offtopic]" title="" src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" /> Really funny thread, so many of those guy seem bored with their tt's. Somebody said "I'm thirteen and my v8 chevy is faster than you" <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />
So I am asking a new question for the guys on this board:

What was your first P-Car experience, and how long did you have to wait to get your first P-car?

About eleven years ago, my mom's boyfriend had a 964 Turbo. It's funny how comfortable a
backseat is when you're a kid going 100 down the street...

Now I am 22, bombs away!

OK, I'll bite....
Like all teenagers, I had car fever and lusted after all kinds of cars I couldn't afford. It wasn't until I was 20 before I actually had a Porsche experience. Another 20-something friend stopped by my house in his employers (A Doctor) 911 Turbo. The good Doctor was something of a strange duck. He had a ridiculously over-boosted, over-engineered 911 with in car boost controls. He was renowned for driving like an old man in the right lane of traffic puttering along religiously at 55mph in this flame throwing monster he had built over many years of loyal, loving ownership.

Needless to say, two completely irresponsible twenty-somethings couldn't resist the temptation to take the car for a little 'test-drive'. My friend drove the car quickly but respectfully. I on the other hand was an *** and cranked the boost **** to full rich and stood on it. With the boost coming on like a freight train and the car instantly jumping to red line, I jumped off the throttle and then back on again. Naturally, it was like riding a bucking bronco and it scared the living sh** out of me.

I pulled over on the shoulder of the highway and tossed the keys back to my buddy, my knuckles still white and my nerves rattled. That was it... I had taken one hit off the go-fast crack pipe and I knew in that instant that I was an addict.

Just last year at age 32, I finally consummated that love affair and bought an immaculate '90 C4 Cabriolet.

Now I'm trying to addict my wife. As an anniversary gift (you think I'm kidding, don't you!) I bought her a helmet. She's driving in her first PCA autocross this weekend. (For all you guys with your Porsche's in frozen winter storage - we're still playing here in the South Florida sunshine!)

terry, thanks for the story!
I am trying to plant the seed very early with my girl, she wants to own one for sure. eventually it would be nice to AutoX his and hers. The best part is , when her parents met back in the day, HER MOM was the one with the 356, so I know it's in her blood.

Seriously, my wife showed me her high school yearbook, where she is quoted as replying to the question, "What will you buy yourself when you finally 'make' it?"

Her answer at age 17: "A purple Porsche".

Well, ten years later, she married the right guy, I guess, but had to settle for arctic silver.

Thumbs up

I was brought home from the hospital in the 911 I own now. My dad bought this car brand new back in 1983 from a friend who had a dealership in Munich and a dealership here, it's funny because the way he tells it he fell into the car by chance. His friend/client said he was bringing himself a 930 turbo over and asked my dad if he wanted the same, my dad just casually said he wanted a 911 but had no preferences. About 2 months later he got a call from said friend to come down to Long Beach and pick his car up fresh-off-the-boat. After that, the paperwork was faxed to him and the road-legal conversions done to the ROW-spec car. I now own/drive the very same 911 my dad drove to and from work for nearly 7 years a round-trip commute of 50 miles a day and then relegated the car to weekend fun-runs until I was 16 and now my dad doesn't drive it anymore. I'm not sure when exactly I was "bit" with the Porsche bug, I guess this car's always been a part of me.

Hey Anir, funny you mention the yearbook story, I made it in the yearbook with my car alongside my friends '02 996 cab just past year when I graduated high school. Here's the pic:

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/porsche-yearbook_R.jpg" alt=" - " /> (BTW, that's me on the far right)

While most of your peers are driving RSX's and WRX's, you already have a C2S on its way...?
Not bad...CJ...not bad. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

A question based on your avatar and a comment you made in a previous post:

Do you play ball professionally? With whom?

Now back to the thread, my first experience in a real Porsche.

When I was 20 and home for college I was a shop porter - a euphemism for go-fer - in a Porsche/MB dealership.

I got to drive a lot of Porsches.

One of the mechanics there, Hartmut Leuschner, had worked for the factory race team.

My Dad had an Alfa GTV, and I was forever telling him how much better Alfas were.

Tom Smothers had a race team that competed in the U-2L category in the Trans Am Series. They had toasted the tranny at Brainnerd, so the team stopped in Northbrook on their way to the next race at Mid-Ohio for a little assistance from the former factory guy.

I drooled all over the car all day instead of go-fering. When the tranny was back in, Hartmut said, wanna ride with while I make sure it's right.

He tested the acceleration. He tested the brakes. and finally he tested the handling, drifting the car right, then left through an S turn at about 75 miles an hour. I was laughing and terrified at the same time.

At the time, I thought he was proving to me how great Porsches were.

Years later, when I learned more about transmissions, I realized he was just being nice to a car crazy kid, giving him the ride of his young life.

Oh no, I have been unmasked. Yes, I play for the Texas Rangers. I am currently in the minor leagues (I finished 2002 in AA), but this year might be my big call up. If anybody needs tickets...

PK

yeah, I grew up in HB so I know what you mean about the rice kids. I am on my second Volvo
(850 Turbo need to sell before spring training).

I think it would be a fun offseason job to work as a go-fer in a P-car dealership.

It's fun to dream, but better when you can accompish little goals everyday...

You guys make the wait for the car a lot easier!

what started me loving these cars was a movie along time ago with Gene Wilder and Richard prior, I think it was Silver Streak. It was about a runaway passenger train. Anyhow Gene was driving a Targa if I remember right. I was about 8yrs old.

Many years pass by and several cars, about 15 or so I bought my first of three 911's. It was 1994 and it was a 78 cab (Targa conversion). I traded in a 85 Corvette and was really disapointed in the 911 at first because it had no power, at least compared to the Corvette. Then I started talking to P-car people and they kept telling me to REV IT UP! Dont be afraid. A new found respect was established. A very great car it was and dead reliable! It was petrol blue with palomino interior. I eventually put some Cup wheels on it. Something was wrong with me because I sold it to a celebrity (Chirstopher Spelling) and bought a 1993 Mercedes 190 2.6. For some reason I wanted a sedan to 'cruise' in. Eventually sold that and was p-car-less until 2001. Restored a 74 911 coupe, then bought the 993 in April of 2002. All that time between p-cars, I wanted another one. Not sure why I didn't look into buying another 911 until recently. What a wonderful marque with so much history.

When I was driving down the GW Parkway one sunny day in the summer, about 8 years ago, and a yellow 1988 (?) Carrera passed me by... (I had always wanted a 911 since college as my roommate had a sweet light blue 912), but until I saw a YELLOW one in that gorgeous sheetmetal up close, I didn't know I had to own one. It was that yellow car that made me say to myself "self - if I ever find a yellow 87-89 Carrera for sale with a black interior, I'm buying it!!!"

A few years later I did find an 88 Venetian Blue Coupe - but I never did find a yellow one for sale. It was love at first sight/drive.

Here's a funny coincidence for you, Stever .... from '95-97 I was living in Silver Spring, Md and driving a black 944 Turbo. My commute to and from work took me either through Rock Creek Park or up/down 16th Street, and I used to catch glimpses of the most beautiful Venetian Blue 911 ... and it increased my lust to get a 911. After reading your recent posts, I'm almost certain that was your car I used to see. Could it have been?

Small world, isn't it John?
Could have been mine, as I drove ALOT in that car. The license plate on the Venetian Blue 88 911 was STLABLU for the Grateful Dead song "Stella Blue". It also had a black license plate frame that said "Have a Grateful Day" with dancing bears all around it. It had no rear tail. I likem' stock!

Your car sounds REALLY nice! I always wanted a turbo, but my friends would have freaked if I bought one. It's bad enough having the turbo body C4S now! I have to keep reminding them (or making excuses for my purchase) "oh, but I got it really cheap, and it's got really high miles (59k), and it's got some cosmetic stuff wrong w/it (stone chips on the hood and a small crease to the rear bumper).

OK- I feel guilty for buying it, a bit. I'm sure I'll get over it. It's only been 2 weeks!

Yup, that's the one Stever! I even remember being unable to figure out what the license plate meant (despite all the Greatful Dead insignia).

I said the exact same things (and still do to friends, etc.) when I got the Turbo, oh it's a 97, stone chips on rocker panels, etc. For the first several months, I would check in on the Turbo before going to sleep at night more often than an OCD person checking the oven burners

We should get together sometime, I'm in Chevy Chase, not far from you.

I opened this thread with the taste of blood in my mouth. I expected this to be a major flame-fest. Way to bite your tongues, guys.
