i recently found out that from a dealer, the price for a brand new 993 engine, in the crate, is about $25,000 whereas a "used" engine is about $9,000.

can these numbers be correct?

the same source also said taht a new 996 engine (brand new) is $10,000.

You would have to have set aside a brand new 993 engine in late 1997, or find the parts and assembly line today to build one. The brand new 996 engine can be plucked off the line today from a much larger batch.

this was sparked by recent interest in getting a used 996 at a steal. the local garage almost jumped out of their skin when i brought this up and the proprietor rolled his eyes and warned me that at about 50k miles, a lot of things tend to go on the 996 engine.

he does not even open up the engine when oil leaks, he said, he just replaces the engine because they are awful things.

something about lousy clutches and lousy engines in the 996 and i am not exaggerating. he doesn't care what i buy and he knows i will take my car there regardless.

You can buy brand new engines for Porsche for 993s or GT1's etc. Doesn't mean they were made 5 years ago and have been sitting on a crate ever since.

The prices sound about right for a used one. I would say the new one is right also, I priced a new supercup motor and it was close to $40K.

i still am dubious that a new crated 996 motor is "only" $10k-12k.

there is not much to explain the twofold to threefold cost other than mass action acting on the watercoolers?

Actually dealer cost on the 996 motor is about $8200, as told to me by a little bird who would know. I guess this is the "mass production" effect or the sh#tty parts according to the non-H2O crowd . Aside from all this I can tell you I run my 996 pretty damn hard and I have never had any trouble with the thing. I think a 996 would actually make a great dedicated track car. I would find the cheapest '99 C2 I could find, add exhaust, coil overs and roll cage and go racing as the cost (ie engine replacement) is a lot more affordable than racing a 993 etc...

They make it up on replacement costs. Figure a 996 track junkie will go thru 1 or 2 replacement motors! (after warranty)

This is just my opinion here, but porsche probably lowered the price of the 996 engine b/c they would much rather have customers buy new engines, rather than replacing them with used ones that they know have a finite lifespan. Thereby lowering resale value.

Also, I don't think the 996 takes as long to assemble as the 993 engine with variocam.

No dry sump on the early 996. Use of Hoosier or slicks caused many problems with oil starvation due to high G's . I know of a couple Chicago area guys that have blown 2 motors in pre 00 cars. Porsche uses the bottom end of a 993 engine in the GT cars. Not a flame, just sharing...

That's my first mod when the warranty runs out in November because it "voids" the warranty LOL.But I run on street tires so I don't think it's an issue for me at this time. All 996 motors share the same integrated dry sump system.

Get the update then get some slicks!!!

I remember Bill in Chicago had to buy a motor for his 996 and it was cheaper than repairing the problem it had. (which I can't remember).

I know a guy that bought a GT1 engine. If $40K made your heart skip a beat I guess $80K without turbos would make it stop.
