Cab Issues Revisited

I have owned British Cabs in the past, so I am accustomed to a few rattles but I am sure that the 993 was designed tighter. Three rattles that bug me are: just over the driver's head - the Cab top "clacking" over rough road; the door latch clatter with the windows up/top down; and the window rattle in the fully-down position.
These are all very subtle noises but I want them gone.
My search of the archives produced the following results:
john-'96 993 cab: The driver's side window on my car rattles (bangs) when I go over bumps. It only occurs when the windows are down.
Mike in Chi: (Top Rattles)It seems to be inside the frame over the driver's side window. It rattles/jangles when I hit a bump or a prominent expansion strip.
TIA, Dave

I also have a 1995 993 Cab. and my guess it that the small motor on the drivers side that locks the top into place is not completely (tightly) closing. Have you tried to manually turn the motor by hand with a screw driver to tighten completely?
You can remove (gently) the long cover that extents across the top of the interior of wind shield and you will see the two motors. To remove take out the two screws at either end of the vinyl covered piece and pop out the bottom of the piece very carefully. Once removed use a slotted screw driver and turn clockwise to tighten, you will see the "slot" on the right hand end of the motor (drivers side). You can actually see the latch "arm" move very slowly as you do this.
Good luck.

The best way to describe the noise I occasionally hear is it sounds like the spring on an old screen door (if you are of a certain age) that gives off a twanging sound if flicked. It's only occasional, so I haven't really chased it down.

I get the "old screen door" squeak and find that lowering the top 1/2 way and lubing the hell out of the springs inside the mechanism cures it for several months. Use grease, not WD40.

I just heard the screen door sound this past weekend. What kind of lube did you use. I also recently learned the hard way that the wind screen can spontaneously eject from the housing and get jammed (then bent, then snapped) when raising or lowering the top.

your post sounds like you may have a wearing cable. the wire cables can tighten with age. also, heard that the plastic casing around the cable can tighten as years go by and even crack causing the cable to possibly jam creating more damage to a motor arm etc...
found this out today--- after picking my cab from it's 15k mi. service. i lowered my top and drove to the beach but noticed the top was not locked down (like normal) ... it was clicking a bit. well after pulling over i closed & re-opened only to notice one side was lowering at a diff. rate than the other. but as i ran the top down i noticed the faster side began to bind up almost started to (crackle) sound. so i immed. stopped the top (read the manual on the point).... the short of it -- i got it to a "top" shop and i'll end up having to replace a cable... also, they are going to make sure every thing is in sinc... the scary news was that earlier they had a client in who tried to run the top after it was binding and he broke one of the motor arms, etc.... costing him $2k. MY SUGGESTION, if your top is that noisy... have a shop do an inspection of your cables, motor etc.... re: noise mine was quiet aside from weather stripping against windows (solved w/ armorall)... except for today when i had this problem. before i put the top down i heard some creaks in the top (from the sides).
<img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> but i'm happy i didn't do more damage operating it! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> i get it back friday, ready for the summer <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" /> a-l-o-h-a
hope this is somewhat helpful.

Rusty - I am going to try your suggestion - Thanks.
r - another good suggestion. I am going in next week for my harness replacement - I will ask the dealer to take a look.
