Lightbulb My alternative to the silver interior.

Instead of shelling out $800 for the silver interior, I decided to paint them myself. Here's the first few pieces. I plan on doing the center console, switch surrounds, OBD access cover. (BTW, does anyone know how to get the locking LEDs & the black LED surround off?)

2 coats of base + 4 coats of clear. The door handles in the pics have been clear coated the console pieces have not been clear coated. It's turned out quite well. Total cost $20 + my labor.

Comments, Flames welcome!

very nice. did you sand down the pieces at all or does the paint smooth out that slight texture in the plastic?

Also does anyone know if any type of primer is necessary?

You definetly want to use primer. Without it your paint will just peel off as most paints do not want to adhere to plastic. I lightly dry sanded the pieces with 400 grit wet/dry sanpaper, just enough to scuff it. Don't sand too much or you will get an uneven finish. The primer, paint and clear coat will smooth it out.

Here's the procedure that I used.
1) Remove pieces
2) Lightly dry sand with 400 or 600 wet/dry sandpaper.
3) Spray light coat of TopFliteLustreKote White Primer model paint. You can find this areosol can at any hobby store. Alternatively you can use any primer that promotes plastic adhesion. Wait 2-4 hours
4) Wet sand lightly with 400 0r 600 wet/dry sandpaper.
5) Spray several light coats of whatever paint you want to use. I used Silver Rust-Oleum High Performance enamel in an areosol can. Lightly Wet-Sand between coats with 600 grit sandpaper.
6) Use several coats of satin or glossy clear-coat. I used 4 coats of RustOleum Crystal Clear Enamel.
7) Wet sand with 1200 and wax.

Very nice job and excellent write-up! If I ever to do this, I'll definitely follow your procedures!

Thank you and Cheers!

Thumbs up

Hi Sashin,

Good job! They look very neat. Are you using the original pieces or second hand bits? If you could do an instrument surround and dash cover bit that would look good in body colour.

Cheers,

David

I'm using the original pieces. Interesting comment about the body color on the instrument surround. I think I'm going to do the vents as well. Don't know about the dash though.

Kim, et-al,

Thanks for the suggestion. looks really good in your pics, especially since you have a black interior. My cashmere interior doesn't set it off as nicely, but still looks better than the black ABS.

I plan on doing the console, speaker grilles, and dash vents as well. I'm trying real hard not to get carried away and paint all the black pieces. I guess I need to leave a little black for contrast.

I'm using the following catalog as a guide.

Hey Sachin,

How go's it? The interior must look pretty awesome now....must go well with the chrome engine pieces you make!

I've not been on the board for a while so have not seen any pics of your new baby...(but I'm glad you chose that over the M5 ;o) )

Any chance you could email me some?

Take care buddy,

Ross

P.S we still on for May?
