Door remote?
Were all 993s equipped with door remotes? I have two keys for the '95 I just got (it's actually a very early Feb '94 car) and no remotes.
If not, I'd like to install a simple remote for the door. I already have one that I used on my BMW. No other functionality needed, I just hate locking the door with the key.
So... I take it I should be able to tap into the door switch on the center console? Any thoughts on wire colors?

I thought all 993s had the Driveblock system which use a remote to lock/unlock, unless PO removed it. What does they key look like. Some early 993s cam with a switchblade style remote with a key.
Maybe somebody else can clarify.

My 95 does not have a remote, so no Driveblock. It does, however, have the door LEDs and the alarm which honks, though I have no idea if it kills the engine. Anyone know if the non-Driveblock cars have an ignition kill built into it?

Both keys I have are regular everyday looking keys. Black plastic head with a little LED light built in. No switchblade, no remote. I know that POs did not remove anything.
Again, it's a very early 993, so I don't think that there's any sort of immobilizer present.

Mike,
95's did not have remote door locks. i believe it only became an option on the '96 and later cars. i do not believe it is retrofitable to the '95 cars.
Also your idea of tapping into the locking system on the center console is a good one in theory - but I do not believe it will work correctly. you may ask why - good question. if you do the diagnostics with a multimeter like i did you will find out that the lock/unlock switch is not powered constantly. furthermore using the lock switch will not turn on the alarm. so you actually have two problems. The first you can get around. The second is more difficult. I've tried it before and I could get everything to work except the led's in the door. in my opinion that is a bad solution - but i did give the old college try. if you are a better electrical expert than i please do try and get back to me if you find a solution. meanwhile - hope this helps.

oh and btw, to get it to work like i did i had to tap into the mobilizer unit under the passenger seat. I was unhappy with the solution so never completed the install.

MIke,
My German '94 Car had a remote and the Porsche Drive Block system
Perhaps they didn't all have them in the US.
Have you checked the history of the car?
Hopefully someone has'nt in the past disabled the drive block (I didnt think that was possible) and just made up ordinary keys from the spare.

I hate alarms, I honestly do. So if the issue is losing the alarm, it doesn't bother me at this point. And if I park in a place where I feel alarm is needed, I can always lock the car with the key to activate it, right?
As far as not having constant power, I can probably power the opener itself from a cig lighter, which seems to stay on all the time.
I am surprised to hear that turning a key actually differs from pushing the center console switch. But if I get the service manuals from Kevin, I can understand the wiring and do the job and write up the results.
There is another possibility. There are solenoids avaiulable out there that one can physically attach to the door lock actuator rod. I'm looking into that for my Miata. But would like to avoid it if I can.
In the meantime, do we know what color wires do what on that console switch before I start tearing into it?

What exactly did you have to do and why?
To make it simple, I had a local radio / alarm shop install a Viper remote locking unit on my '95 which activates the locks ( and blinking light) as well as the factory alarm. All I remember is he had to use a couple more relays or something. No big deal, it was under $140 and it took less than 1 1/2 hours.
i sat there testing how the immobilizier unit worked. The best config i got to work is that I determine what the immobilizier unit was doing to turn on and off the alarm/doors. then i hooked up an alpine alarm (just the brain with the door locks) to the immbolizier unit. I got everything to work except the LED's in the door. The factory alarm was active, the doors would lock/unlock but the damn LEDs would not come on.
on a different note, now that people have claimed that the immobilizier unit has keyless on a '95 - then you should be able to retrofit it in. can anyone post the part # of the immobilizier unit?
thanks,
boris

I'm am still a bit confused. My car is a very early one, Feb '94 build. I need to figure out if it has an immobilizer at all. Somehow I doubt that it does. I did not see any mention of it in the manual when I brifly read it.
