Post Insurance for the Track???

For those of you who do more than "DEs," do you have special insurance for "incidences" on the track? From what I understand, most mainstream insurance companies will cover events where "Education" is part of the title. So how many of you carry special insurance for all the "other" events? If so, what do you pay and what is the level of coverage? Thanks in advance!

I have insurance through Leland West and I recall language in the policy that specifically excludes DE events. I think this is a fairly popular policy w/ p-car owners (advertised in Pano).

Does anyone know how to deal with DE events in this case. Seaparate insurance just for the DE...?? ...or maybe and exclusion or rider from L-W??

By the dearth of responses, should I assume all of you accept the risks of tracking the car without insurance?

Frankly, this is what I have been doing and have just been driving "defensively," especially around others. But I'm wondering if any of you have looked into "peace of mind" insurance in case your baby gets bent on the track? TIA

Most companies will cover a DE incident once then drop you. Do not have a hot laps timer hanging on the roll bar when the adjuster shows up.

So if you have a crash pay it out of your own pocket unless it is a huge incident. As for racing coverage most of the better companies no longer offer it. I found one company with a very weak track policy. For the deductable and the premium you should self insure.

Edward:

There is a company called Pacific On Track which offers DE/Racing coverage. I believe that they sell their coverage in blocks of days, like 30 days worth of coverage. After the fist year with them, they offer some discounts assuming no claims. You will have to call them and discuss your needs and understand their deductibles. I have found that unless you do significant damage to your car – greater than $10,000, it may be just as effective to self-insure. Pacific On Track can be found at www.pacificontrack.com

Hank,

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I guess everyone else just accepts the risks and is willing to pay if the unfortunate happens? Now THERE'S a scary thought!

looking into this for a '74. American Collectors has a DE policy. the premium is 1.5% of the value of the car and a 20% deductible. Don't know if they write newer cars but might be worth a check. Americancollectorsins.com

That said, I have two friends that wrecked their cars at a DE event. $25,000 of damage to one, fully covered, not dropped or even hit with a higher premium.

The other.....TOTALED a 2001 Turbo. FULLY covered and again, not dropped or rated. Guess you have to check your policy.

Advise? Ask you agent, then get him to put it in writing.

Jeff,

Ditto to E.J.'s question.

Also, had your friends declared their DEs to their ins. companies ahead of time?

As for AmericanCollectors, do you know anyone who is with them or has ever had to file a claim?

Thanks!!!

I specifically discussed this issue with my State Farm agent, and she emphatically assured me that I would be covered as long as it is an "educational" event, not a race or timed event.

I've stated this on previous occasions, but it may be worth repeating. Get to know your agent. Mine has become a good friend, and I have home, auto, life, umbrella, specific artwork, etc, all through her. I've also sent her other clients, because she does an excellent job. If you are a valued customer, your agent is more likely to go to bat for you, should something unfortunate occur.

Anir,

Your point is not lost on me. Perhaps I was not clear from the onset. I DO understand that "education" events are often covered. I posted this query initially in hopes to find people who TimeTrial and/or race. Insuring for these events is my chief concern.

Edward,

I apologize for not reading your original post more carefully. I was looking at the subsequent responses discussing DE's.

I think Greg Fishman has insured his car for actual PCA club races for about $800 / weekend. Don't remember the name of the company, though.

I believe State Farm and Farmers still cover DE events.

However, ALSTATE does not. A few drivers on the Tracquest board looked at their policies and they are NOT covered.
