Post Is it possible to repair front bumper?

yesterday, my dog chewed on my bumper (where it joins the wheelwell).

apparently my dog like the taste so much that it chewed along the edge of the front bumper.

Besides replacing the bumper, is there any other way to fix it?

Without more detail on the damage it is difficult to say but as the unit is plastic I would think it is repairable. You might like to speak to a specialist motorcycle paint shop (strange recommendation on a Porsche board I know)but they will have a lot of experience with repairing damage to plastic fairings on motor cycles including plastic welding.

Take it to a good body shop...they should know about plastic repairs. A lot of stuff can be repaired...but what about the dog? How are you going to stop him from treating your pcar as a chewing toy?

I second the recommendation on motorcycle shops. They do truly amazing things with plastic fairings. Most automotive body shops probably just order a new part, and could have less experience. Motorcyclers are a more frugal and conservative lot.

I saw a rear bumper for a 996 cup car yesterday that had melted away around one of the exhaust holes. Quite bad damage actaully. The guys here in San Diego repaired the area very nicely, making the repair somewhat flexible just like the rest of the bumper. It looked like they used some support to build up the area. Not sure what they used to fill it in though. Anyway, I think it is certainly possible to repair it. You just have to find the right guy.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

Initially I was told by my usual Porsche-specialized garage to replace the entire front bumper at US$ 900 (including painting).

I found some bodyshop which called a guy specializing in bumper repair. Was told it is repairable, and was quoted approx. US 270 for the repair.

I think I agree with Mike's suggestion about possibly using a Motorcycle shop for the repair. Taiwan has a large motorcycle market (about 2 mil units sold per year), and a lot of body repair shops may have experience with repairing plastic parts.

Will post a photo after I get the car back on coming Thursday for everyone's reference.

Too bad I forgot to photograph the "before" photo.

My fingers are crossed, hoping for a good repair.

I will try to train my dog to chew on something else....(at least not my Porsche), as Mike suggested.
