Will 315/30/18 tires fit on the back of a C2S?

OK, let's get specific then. The original question was:

So, he's not asking if the 11.5" wheel will fit the car, nor if the 315/30 tire will fit the 11.5" wheel, he's asking if the 315/30 tire will fit on the back of a Carrera S. I answered that I currently have that size on my car, and that my car is pretty low, and that the tire tread will occasionally rub the fender liner when the car encounters a large bump (only when the shocks are set to full soft), and that my fender lips have been rolled.

I am using 18X11.5 rims

I don't know if those wheels will fit on the car. He does not mention which suspension he has, but if it's stock, the wheels will not fit. Either the wheels will stick out wider than the fenders, or the wheels will contact the suspension. When I bought my 11.0" wide wheels, a bit of research told me that 11.0" was the widest wheel that would fit under the fender with coil overs. If the wheel sticks out past the fender, then the tire surely will.

Would sure be nice if I could get ONE straight forward answer to a simple question

Maybe what we needed was a stright forward question?

True, DJ. It would be helpful, for example, to state: "I currently have an xx rim wheel with the following offset. It is mounted with XX/XX/XX tires. I have an XXXX suspension and am running with XXX camber on the rear wheels. What is the largest wheel I can mount?" A snapshot of the current extent of wheel fill on the wheel arch would also help.

Fill in the XX's and we might get closer to guessing...

Thanks for the info. I am getting SSR GT3 wheels from Tire rack. They recommend an 18X11.5 rear wheel but with the stock size tire. They never recommend larger sizes, even if they will fit. We all know a 295 should without a problem. The next size up is a 315. That would fit the 11.5 rim no problem, but would it rub with stock suspension, no rolled fenders? I want to make it fit without any modifications. If you guys think a 315 is a bad idea WITHOUT modifications...then I'll take your advice. The tirerack guys aren't very dependable when it comes to anything thats not factory. THanks again.

First of all, the stock rear tire size is 285/30 and I would never install it on an 11.5" wheel. The widest you should go for that tire is 10.5". Second, why are you looking for such a huge tire size? Your car doesn't need it and will slow down with so much rubber (too much drag and weight). My advice is to stick to stock or go one size higher and choose the softest compound or stickiest tire possible.

Viken,

tire rack recommends the 11.5 rim with the 285 tire for the C2S. I understand the 285 is stock, but also didn't want to put it on the 11.5 rim. That is why I elicited the help of the more experienced people here on the forum. I thought I would at least need the 295 on that rim, if not the 315...I simply have no experience and was hoping people like you knew the answers. I really do appreciate the input. Have a nice day.

fxrdoc, actually the next size up would be a 305. Personally, I would play it safe and put a 10.5 inch wheel w/ a 285/30 tire, or at a maximum, 11 inch wheel with a 295 series tire. What's really important here is the offset of the wheel. Start with that first. And just because Tire Rack suggests it, I would still contact someone that has installed these wheels and tires with those sizes in mind, or you may be in for a world of hurt.

You didn't say what tire you intend to fit. I think you'll find that contrary to TireRack's reported rec, the widest approved wheel for a 285/30x18 tire is 11.0" - at least according to Michelin, Pirelli, Kuhmo & Bridgestone.

Pirelli, michelin, bfg, bridgestone are all included in the 285/30/18 size that they recommend with that wheel. The 315 would be a pirelli p zero rosso. I don't think there is a 305/30/18 other than for race applications. From the info i am getting here, sounds like tire rack may be sending me in the wrong direction with that 11.5 wheel. They are generally pretty conservative folks though.

With stock suspension, and without rolled fenders, it will not fit.

Just out of curiosity: I read an article on the 2002 Ruf Turbo with 520 hp. It is equipped with Pirelli P Zeros, 18x8.5 225/40 ZR, 18x10 295/30 ZR wheels and tires. Why do you need wider wheels and tires? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

fxrdoc,

you do realise ? that a 315/30 has a significantly larger rolling diameter than the (more) standard 285/30, thus altering gearing, overall height, even the caster to some extent. My numbers give me 12.4" tread width and 646.2mm diameter versus 628.2mm for the 285, or 3% taller.

285 is plenty wide enough, you exercise the multi-link rear quite enough keeping that flat(ish) on the road.

O.K., sorry I brought it up. I just thought it might look good and perhaps handle better with the larger footprint. From what I gather here, it wouldn't be prudent, nor would it help performance any. I'll stick with the stock size...I guess the porsche boys knew what they were doing when they settled on that size. Thanks again for all the input.
