Question Where to find "clear vinyl tubing" and other transmission oil change questions...

Hi gang,

I was going to replace the transmission oil in my car this afternoon, but I can't find a 5' (or any sizeable) length of clear plastic tubing at any local auto parts store. So this begs the question of Jeff, Robin, & others....where did you get yours ?

BTW, I couldn't determine if there is a crush washer for the filler plug in the shop manuals, and the parts guy at my dealer couldn't find one in the parts directory either...is there one ?

Also, I was all set to change the oil with Mobil 1, but it too seems to be scarce...is it really worth ordering amsoil online ?

And one final question...how/where does everyone go to dispose of the used oil ?

cheers,

sean

Just changed fluid in my 73 915

Got a gear box pump w/ all tubing from nothern tool for $10. Worked perfect.

My filler plug nor drain plug did NOT have washers.

I used mobil 1. Try any mobil gas staion or the "autozone" chain. Any local discount store should have it.

Look in thephonebook. A bit of searching found a place who takes old oil/antifreeze ect. for low cost or free. Good idea to dispose of it properly.

I would think any hardware store would have clear tubing. Possibly a fish store as well

Sean, home depot has the tubing. As for the recycling, your county or city seat should have a recycling center. Shouldn't be that hard to find.

AS for Mobil 1, you have to look harder, it cant be that hard to find. Try Target, or Wally-mart too. Any auto store should have it too.

Have fun.

Okay...found the Mobil 1 at Autozone, and tubing at Lowes...great advice! So I'm good to go now.

The shop manual says to change the oil w/the transmission at operating temp - how do I avoid burning myself when I pull the drain plug ? ( Michelle would just *love* that )

Very carefully! Seriously, it's not that big a deal. a) loosen the fill plug first! b) break the drain plug free w. the ratchet, then unthread it by hand (or w. a socket for a little extra leverage). Keep some pressure upwards on the bolt so it doesn't just drop unawares. When you can spin it but it doesn't extend any further, and feels a bit wobbly, it'll probably also have some oil oozing out as well. Just yank it off to the side, or let go & let it drop into the pan. And the oil doesn't get so hot that you'd be at any risk of raising blisters.

If you'd like a hand, my schedule's pretty clean today.

Hey Robert...thanks for the advice! I just read your email I decided to let it cool just a bit until I could touch the transmission housing comfortably - then I went for it. Turned out to be a non-event...thankfully. Grin.

The good/bad/ugly is that it appears the oil has *never* been changed since new. I looked over my records, which are exceptionally detailed, and found no reference to the tranny oil being changed. When I pulled the drain plug, a substance of tar-like consistancy poured out! It took 1.5 hours to drain the resevoir (3.6 liters) completely!!!!

I replaced the drain-plug, torqued it to 30 Nm, which seems absurdly low, and filled with the Mobile 1 with no hassle. Incidently, though the Shop manuals don't specify a crush washer for the filler, it's the same as for the drain plug.

Needless to say, when I drove the car this evening, after the change, it was night-and-day difference. The reason I decided to do the change was because the tranny had started to grind shifting gears when the cooler weather moved in. I'm happy to report that the car didn't grind once this evening

Incidently, while I was waiting for the pitch to drain from the tranny housing, I changed out the pollen filters ($42 each, ack) as well - as they too had never been changed. They were black as midnight!

So now that I've got all of this under my belt, any Houstonites who need a tranny refresh...feel free to come by my house !!!

Now if I could just figure out how to recycle this nasty oil!

cheers,

sean

I know how you feel - very happy the tranny's finally got fresh oil, horrified it's had to go that long w. old oil in the first place! Now that you know how easy it is, you're in the same boat w. everyone else -- you'll never go more than a year or so w/o changing it.

The Texaco down the street from my house is one of those rare full-service stations still left. They let me dump my oil in their holding tank. There's got to be a Jiffy Lube or similar w/in spitting distance of your house - they're everywhere - wouldn't hurt to ask them.

Hey, you should have come to breakfast yesterday w. the Pelican folks - it was a good time. I was the first one to break away... after six hours!!

I had the same problem when I got my 993---not sure when the tranny oil was last changed but I had no record of it. I dumped the old oil (it was black but not gooey), filled with a cheaper gear oil, drove the car for 300km, and then dumped again and now filled with the expensive stuff...basically doing an oil flush. On the second change the oil was much cleaner.

Being from the old school I am using Swepco (primarily because it worked great in my SC and I still had a couple of gallons kicking around). Not sure what oil you put in... "Mobil 1"? Is there a Mobile 1 Gear Oil?

Yup, Mobil 1 75w-90 is the recommended fill, but no one's ever had their tranny fall out (that we're heard, anyway!) from using any other good 75w-90 gear oil.

I changed the gear oil today (hot) on my 1997 993 with LSD. The car has 32k miles on it and according to service records the gear oil had never been changed. There was a sphere of fine particles on the magnetic drain plug which was not a surprise. The oil had a black tint but looked quite good. There was a metal gasket on the drain plug (which I reused because the dealer did not have in stock) but no gasket on the fill plug.

My only regret was not having newspaper under the gearbox. When the oil first rushed out there was a big splash and the gear oil stained my concrete floor. It does not clean up like motor oil!

Regards,
George

Thanks Danny, but this is one job I'm not going to DIY! I understand the pros use forced-air respirators when acid washing the floors, sounds pretty nasty.

hey, come to think of it, I *could* use a hand schlepping the huge amount of stuff in the garage into my neighbor's garage to clear out the space... I'll supply the beer!

I have a LSD as well. Do you need to add a friction modifier or is the regular Mobil One tranny juice OK as is?
