Just curious, what shop did you take it to?

If you attempted to stall the car by putting it in gear and slowly engaging the clutch, I believe the injection system would attempt to keep the rpm's at ~800 (idle) by adding more fuel/air.

I had a VW 16V GTI with Bosch F.I. and I could put the car in first gear and idle up all but the steepest hills. The F.I. would simply increase the fuel to maintain a proper idle regardless of the load on the engine. But, if I disengaged the clutch under those conditions, the unloaded engine would immediately bounce off the rev limiter!

So, unless you put the car in gear, kept one foot on the brake and engaged the clutch in one quick motion, it might be difficult to stall the engine. It still doesn't explain why turning the ignition off didn't do the trick. Hmmm..

Best of luck with the repair!

Matt

That was exactly how I disengaged the clutch. I didn't want to slip the clutch for several reasons, one being I had a cement pillar only a few inches from the fender. I was worried that I'd smack it.

As for turning the key, could it be that with the starter stuck in engage mode it just kept on trying to start the car? I would love to know the sequence of events from inserting the key to normal start and vice-versa. What components are involved to start/stop the engine.

E. When I first read your post, I immediately thought wiring harness. I will be interested to hear if it was in fact the starter motor. Seems funny, but plausible. Let us know.

Edit: I went back to download the wiring harness pictures from a recent post and saw that the pics were yours. Then I reread your original post and saw that you just replaced the harness. My oversight in recommending that as a culprit. But knowing that, let me pose this question to the smart guys here, is it possible that they crossed some wires in installing the new harness that could cause this? I doubt it, but thought I would ask.

At any rate, good luck and let us know what happens.

Well I got the car back on Tuesday and all seems fine once again. When starting the car it sounds louder, but from outside the car it sounds sweet. I'm getting used to it now, in fact it may be getting quieter. One thing I did notice was that when I started the car for the first time at the shop it seemed to start much stronger than before.

They showed me the old starter and I could see where the gear didn't retract fully. The bill came to $476 out the door.

If something should fail I'll let you know. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Sorry to bring an old and I'm sure bad memory but where was the starter motor located on your car? Have a similar problem on my car but less dramatic - there is no crank sounds from the starter. battery ok, electricals ok.
Thanks

I had a failed starter replaced on my 964 a few weeks ago and it now sounds like another car when it starts.

I think this is related to the weezy sound the old starter made and the nice sharp effeciant sound the new one makes.

Now starts on the button everytime
