I wouldn't install the photographed wheel at your Indy. Take your car to a factory authorized Porsche Premium Dealer.

I like the stock 4 poster wheel. The design gods a Porsche meant for it to be this way and I don't feel I need to violate their sense of design!

. I don't care about the airbag, IMHO a 993 RS clone like mine needed the RS steering wheel ;-)

if the car is hit badly enough to need it, it'll likely be totalled like an '83 SC I had that was totalled by a drunk Harley Rider that laid it down in my path

(trust me, you do NOT want to see pics of that)

RUF 993 three-spoke wheel in Alcantara and leather with airbag. No contest

I have had a chance to try all of the wheels (4 spoke, 3 spoke, and the RS one). They are all very different.

I think I like the 996 3 spoke one so far in terms of tactile feel and function. The thumb rests/notches are nice and does a good job absorbing NVH. The stock 4 spoke is similar in feel but larger in diameter which is a bit large for my tastes. I am actually having both a 4 and 3 spoke rewrapped and thickened and make the call once I have it back on the car which one fits in better with my interior job.

The RS momo one looks great, and I am still getting used to it. One thing I don't like about it is the leather is a bit slippery when your palms get sweaty and too thin. Probably driving with some gloves will help with me. Also a downside you don't realize until you drive with one is you now "feel" more as momo hub has no rubber further increasing NVH.

Anything but a 4 spoke. So ugly.

4 spoke all the way. I know the 996/boxter swap is popular, but does not look period correct to me. Happy with my thickened 4-spoke.

I've touched a lot of wheels. A lot of wheels. To me, the first question is whether you want to retain an airbag, If so, a 996 wheel, thickened and with thumbrests shaved, is my answer on my own 993. There are also Raid and Atiwe airbag wheels an example is shown about as "RUf whee;" (it's a Raid made for RUF). If no airbag, there are a million good wheels, including Momo Prototipo that is the best Porsche wheel out there, aesthetically, IMHO.

Now, there are several considerations:

1. 993 4-spoke wheels is about 380mm. 996 wheel is 360, standard Momo is 350.
2 The stock wheel is not symmetrical between the upper and lower part. The upper part is taller. That allows for a much better view of the gauges.
3. Pay attention to the cross section of the wheel. Most Momo wheels are not round, but rather a pronounced oval. They are also not as thick, save for a few, like Momo Competition.
4. You will have your instruments covered by the top of the (symmetrical) Momo/Sparco wheel. There are offset adapters out there that move the entire wheel up, search.
5. Pay attention to the dish of the aftermarket wheel. With fixed column and pedals it's extremely important to chose the right dish for your driving position (and sit up strait, you are likely not Italian enough to be laying down and your name most likely ain't Fabio.).

There are other consideration. but the first one, again to airbag or not to airbag.

thanks @nile13 - I didnt realize that the 996 wheel was smaller.

I came from the A1/MK1 Golf "scene." Those cars had no crumple zones and no airbags.

The mentality with those guys was

Needless to say, I have touched a few wheels myself

I still have a box of unknown hub adapters around here somewhere....

I have a few very similar pics and an Opel hub still inexplicably sitting on a shelf in my utility room. And at least one Audi 80 hub and a Jetta 2 hub and..

Don't like airbags either. But I've learned to live with them in most of my cars.
