Another glorous old thread that is still relevant! I looked through all pictures, and admire and respect all choices, but for me, it re-asserts that the original 4 spoke wheel is perfect for me. As impressive as it it how many people love the 3 spoke 996 wheel, it simply doesn't look right in my eyes. And forget about any wheel without airbag - if you are driving anywhere on a public road, I can't fathom voluntarily switching an airbag steering wheel with a non-airbag wheel.

Is this documented somewhere? I find it very hard to believe…the 993 4-spoke came on early 986/996 models, however…

Another vote for flat bottom modification…

For those that have swapped to a non-airbag curious about the difference between the stock 993 column switch cover vs the 964 switch cover. Is the pic below all you need for the 964 swap?

anyone have a before / after comparison?

Yes that's the point - you could order either airbag steering wheel from some time in 96-97, which includes first the 993, then Boxster and slightly later the 996.

Pretty sure this is the 3-spoke wheel being referred to, but happy to be proven wrong:

Proven wrong?

The full Porsche options catalogue I cut a few photos from shows the two steering wheels, neither of which are the 'sports' steering wheel you show above.

I'm pretty sure Porsche called each different 3-spoke steering wheel something different, as both your and my snippets 'prove'. So in your snippet it's a 'sports steering wheel' - in my five snippets, none is called 'sports'.

I don't have the full options catalogue with me, but here's the Boxster page, offering exactly the same two steering wheels, again for clarity neither described as 'sports'. And lets include the 996 as well. No mention of 'sports'.

^ The only 993 3-spoke airbag wheel I see photographed in Porsche sales literature is the Atiwe. If you have something showing a photo or option code for the 986/996 wheel in a 993, please post it…genuinely curious.

I just got a 3-spoke a couple of months ago. I love it.

I never liked the look or feel of the 4-spoke all that much. The 3-spoke is pretty much the same size, but it just feels a little smaller for some reason, and of course it has an air-bag - something I will not go without.
The full-color badge can look "off" to me when combined with certain colors but with black I think it looks great.
I also couldn't believe how easy it was to install... maybe 15 minutes (not counting the battery disconnect time to make sure the air-bag doesn't misfire!)
