Talking Funny Exhaust Story

Funny story,

Yesterday afternoon on my way home from work, I stopped at the local Walgreens for some odd & ends. As I pulled in there were 3 slammed hondas parked in the front row. After I parked, 3 guys walked over to me and demanded to know where I got those "bad-***" mufflers, apparently they sounded "kickin'", and one guy commented that he loved the growl. (Mind you these are stock mufflers, not RSRs!)

I just told them the mufflers were Porsche OEM, and that mine were the same ones that had been delivered on the car 71,000 miles ago in 1995.
One of the guy's jaws just dropped open. "You mean Porshe mufflers sound like that from the factory ??" Yep.

The guys wrote down the info about my car and walked off disussing how they could retrofit some porsche mufflers to their hondaz. It'll be funny when I call the parts guys up at Mommentum to ask them how many mufflers they sold today

Just thought I'd share...

cheers,

sean

?!? ???

You must have a hole in your OEM mufflers... I can't imagine they even could have heard mine.

Good thing you didn't have the RSRs on, no telling -- you might have come out of the store to find them under your car w. a wrench! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Yeah, that is odd. If there is one thing 993s don't have going for them, it's sufficiently aggressive sounding OEM mufflers. Like Robert said, imagine if they had heard the RSRs!

I'm not sure what you're talking about...my mufflers definitely rumble. In part that's why I don't have the RSRs...I'm afraid they'd be louder than what I've already got!

I agree, stock sound is just silence. You can also imagine if they had heard mine w/ Supercups!

Wink

Mine were relatively quiet when I got the car; the again, "relatively" in comparison with my old '84 Carrera with a Stebro (as I remember) muffler on it. What made a nice difference was drilling a bunch of holes in the air filter plastic cover - really gave the car a nice "growl" under full accelleration. For more info, do an archive check.

Think the 993's are quiet? Try a 996 - sounds like a Cadillac in comparison.

Actually, 'sewing machine' is what usually comes to mind

Sean .... maybe something has been done to your mufflers that you're not aware of? Or, maybe you got a good set?

I suppose when compared to normal cars such as Toyota Camrys or Honda Accords (not riced!), a 993 may rumble. But, compared to every 911 that came before, it's (too) quiet.

Similarly, went I traded my '84 for my C2, the only thing I missed was the '84's sportier/louder sounding exhaust & fan "noise."

Sean's encounter is surprising to me as well, but it's kind of hard for me to tell how my car sounds (than most other cars, including my Honda) since I have only heard mine outside the car when it's idling.

What I do know is that there is certainly a noticiable difference between my 95 and Randall's car - his sounds much better and you can hear coming him almost a block away. We had our cars idling next to each other in my driveway once and the difference was striking.

So yes, I would like to have better exhaust sound than stock but I tried an aftermarket system a while back and had such a horror story with resonance that it is now way down on my priority list to try again.

Cheers,
-Larry

I've got the stock 993 motorsound exhaust and it does have somewhat of a rumble. Nice sound... very much like the RSRs. If you want a deeper, throatier sounding exhaust, check out the Fabspeed MaxFlow exhaust. Nice deep sports car sound. If you want to be a bit outrageous get then get Fabspeed supercups, they are the way to go. Personally, I like the idea of switching between the quieter MotorSound mufflers and the louder supercups as it keeps things interesting...

For a true-kick-***-Porsche-as-they-were-meant-to-be-sound, nothing beat the setup I had on my '98 911 Carrera S (unless it were a factory race car): removed the mufflers & replaced them with B&B by-pass pipes with their beautiful stainless-steel tips. I would get compliments everywhere I went, be it at a stop light or on the highways. Even had a Highway Patrolman roll along side just to "take in the sound."
