Post rsr muffs....????

Hello all,

I know this subject has come up before, but can anyone describe what Robins RSR muffler mod sounds like? I know its hard to put in words, but give it a try.

I am not looking for loudness, just throatyness.

Any but dyno (or even real dyno) results?

I will be taking the mufflers off the 993 soon to have them RSR'd. The car is a 1995 if that makes a difference.

Thanks again,

Chris

Throatier is a good description !

I installed my set about 2 1/2 weks ago. The car now has a deeper and throatier sound when I can hear the exhaust going under freeway overpasses. It no longer sounds like a late '70's VW Beetle. Also, slightly lower pitch from inside, but no nasty resonances like some of the after market name brands.

The bid plus is the bottom end feel. The throttle response seems smoother down in the under 3500 range.

If this is any sort of help. The sound catches my neighbors but no one has yelled. Incomparison, I have Flowmasters on my 3/4 ton Chevy Truck. The "MiniVan Moms" constantly yell as I drive by regardless of my speed. The also yell with my '72 "S" targa. Robin's mufflers are a mellow tone...

Hope this helps

Bitchin...that is what they sound like. I'll have the car in OC next Monday...I can swing by Yorba Linda in the afternoon on the way back to San Diego. You can hear RSRs with about 1 1/2 years on them. Hold on to your checkbook because I can guarantee you will like the sound.

Martin,

You would do that for me? I would love to hear it plus I get to meet another rennlister! You can check out our new purchase.

Let me know what time you can stop by, and I will try to make arrangements at work. I can easily be home by 4:30 or so.

Let me know. E-mail me at work:

Thanks,

Chris

My TT mufflers are coming back from Gert in about three hours (the wonders of DHL tracking) having been RSR'd. I will chime in then tho' I am sure I will just eulogise like everyone else.

BTW everything that people say about Gert is true: he told me to package up the mufflers and DHL them to him in Belgium and he would turn them around in 3 days. True to his word he got them collected on Monday, paid a collection premium off his own back and passed just the basic cost onto me, and they arrived with him Tuesday. Back on the truck Thursday evening to arrive in London Friday lunch. He gives the best customer service I have EVER come across.

Truly a class act. Many thanks Gert and Robin.

Will,

Did he modify your Mufflers ??
does that mean a week without the car,

I thought you returned yours once the RSR's where installed ??

Or is it because yours is a TT

Cheers

Grant... Gert just did mine. It did mean Sunday eve to Fri eve without the car (although I did take it out of the garage to clean it and the whole street shook. With no mufflers at all it burbled like a cigarette boat !)

However, his genius means it should all be working again by this evening.

You are right, the usual course is to buy them from him and send your old cans back on receipt but he didn't have any spare TT cans to work on and said it would be an age before he found any so I just sent mine over... no real hassle. However, it may be different with stock 993 mufflers, I don't know. Give him a call just for the pleasure of dealing with him.

I wish you all the best if you decide to go for it... after the recommendations on this board I had the car for 2 weeks before deciding to change

Will,

I've just got to hear those mufflers after they're sorted. How much does it cost to replace them? My car's in bits at the moment, so it might be an idea to get the work done now. Do they really improve the noise of the TT? The engine noise is a little anemic for my liking. Lets me down when I'm with my TVR friends...

The previous owner of our turbo has some sound clips of the RSR muffs on his web site- I looked and they were still there-

This has come up so many times, your best bet is to search the archives. There are plenty of descriptions of the RSRs in comparison to other aftermarket exhausts.

I agree the topic has come up many times, but in relation to normally-aspirated cars. The turbos are aurally-limited compared to their naturally-aspirated counterparts.

Cool

I would agree with Rob. The RSR's on the TT do sound good but they are not nearly the sound hike that I imagined. However, the characteristics that have been mentioned appearing with RSR's are apparent. i.e. an increased 'edge' under hard acceleration (a rasp), a gentle 'pop' from sharp back-off the throttle and an increased wooffle at idle.

However, for TT owners they are a definate upgrade but not nearly the same bang-for-buck as for NA owners (I imagine).

Hell, I ain't complaining tho'.

Willbank,

I have organised for my mufflers to be sent over to Belgium this afternoon. Wish I could have listened to your car first, but it's such a cheap mod I thought I'd take the chance. I'll let you know what I think when the car is finally returned in one piece.

Nwxt step has got to be cat bypass...

One other thing to note is that many RSR owners have mentioned that it takes some time (i.e. 500mi) for the muffler mods to bed in. Read Will and Vinnie's entries in the following link:
