Talking

Rob, NOW you're talking!

We should take it in turns doing these mods so we each bear the cost of exploration in turn then meet up, check out the difference and get it done on the other car.

Is there a reliable cat bypass kit? Would it affect turbo backpressure?

WillBank,

You're on!!! Though knowing the impact most mods will have on my wallet makes me wince a little. I've just laid out £3k to have my valve guides replaced.

I understand the FVD kit is very reliable and reversible (for MOT's etc). Turbos don't actually like backpressure from the exhaust, so a freer-flowing pipe improves performance. There's a write-up on this at:

FVD Test Report

Hope this helps. At this stage I don't know of a shop that could fit this in the UK. Maybe you've got more connections...

Question

The only problem with that thread is that we only have Joe "Fib" Fab to go by when it comes to being able to switch them back.

Do any of you (Robin, Gert et al) know of a truly reversible cat bypass system? Do you reckon it would be possible to create a butterfly valve which could route exhaust past the cats and back to the tips? The idea would be to make a simple spanner adjustment to route back through the cats and thus pass an emissions (MOT) test..?

Probably no chance but unfortunatley I don't have the plasma welding skills to find out. Expert opinions?

Willbank,

I've been talking to Stuttgart connection about the Cargraphic range of cats. Apparently there is a sports cat setup that provides most of the breathing capability of the bypass. Here is their reply:

[quote]
The cat bypass used on the 993 turbo is not legal for road use so I will give you the price of the 100cell catalyst set also. The slightly complicated nature of these parts means that the price difference for the cat set versus the bypass is not as much as you might expect.

Cat bypass set 993T £937.50 + vat

100cell high performance
catalyst set 993T £1312.50 + vat

Chris:

Next time when I do a fly-by on the 91 toll-road, you'll notice it from your house.

On a serious note, I'm down in Riverside so if you want to hear it, let me know.

Rob,

Thanks for the info... sorry not to get back to you sooner - have been away from the board.

Has anyone tried these 100 cell cats? At £1000+ they are a hefty investment and I wonder if they really produce better sound/power for the money. Any UK owners have them so that I might hear them... Rob, are you doing it?

Best wishes to you all (and hope you had a good bank holiday all you UK peep's). Will

Cool

Chris,
I've had Robin's mufflers in my '96 since last fall. They sound fantastic. Best investment so far. A very nice deep burble without the resonance problems I have with a B&B Triflow on a 540i. My wife and I autocrossed at Hershey two weeks ago. My son said it was the best sounding 964 / 993 / 996 there. Even my wife, who usually could care less about such things, commented on how good the car sounded, both from outside the car and inside.
It's not too loud, but the neighbors will recognize your arrival just by the tone. At least my motor head neighbors do.

Hi Willbank,

I'm on holiday all week, so can indulge my Rennlist habit a bit more than usual.

[quote]Any UK owners have them so that I might hear them... Rob, are you doing it?

I'm already going to be £4k out of pocket this month with the car, so I'm afraid it's your turn to splash out! I'm getting:

- Full valve guide replacement set
- RSR Mufflers
- Stainless Steel Turbo door sills

I would search the archives, or contact Stuttgart Connection to find out more. I'm sure they will have some sort of demonstrator.
