Question '94 993...question

Hi I am a new member to the rennlist board although I have benefited tremendously from some of the great articles. After driving a 87 911 for many years I took the next big step and purchased a 993. A couple of surprises along the way... I discovered car manufacture date was 4/94, one of the first, and technically a 94 (despite CARfax 95 indicator). The big question - why do I have those euro bubble indicator lights ? All evidence is that the car is not grey market but why the side lights.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to Graham Mitchell for his advise on my wire harness research for this year.

Welcome, DD! Sorry, other than to suggest that the previous owner added the lights, I don't have an answer. I'm sure someone else will.

Yes, I am referring to the side markers on the front fenders. I was theorizing that the early build dates might have had them as standard but the 3/94 993 by Silver Bullet kills that theory. Sound like an after market add. Alternate theory is fenders were replaced due to a front end accident and they used a non US fender source.

(P.S. soory I'm not Dana).

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 993 start production in Europe as MY94? The side marker lights were standard on the European cars, but may have been added to a North American car.

DD, are you certain your car wasn't imported into the US after its original purchase? Check the VIN -- Non-North American cars have "ZZZ" as their 4th-6th characters (after the "WPO").

According to the Porsche Red Book, 993 production began in January '94, and "U.S. cars were introduced in April 1994 with the majority sold as 1995 models under option code 718".

Either way, enjoy your new ride!

Tend to agree - only have to look at the VIN at the bottom of the windshield. Should say something like WPOAA2. The "VIN" number branded into the chassis in the trunk area someplace will say WPOZZZ (conversion to a US car is done after the chassis is made). Also, should have a label on the door sill that sez month of manufacture and certifying it as a US car.

As indicated, previous moron owner probably added the Euro marker lights.

DD,
Did you happen to purchase a silver car, located in New England, not long ago?

American car with the side marker lights added. I looked at the same car, thought maybe it had the G50-21 gearbox, but it is american.

Nice car though. Ever want to upgrade to the euro turbo bumper give me a shout. I'm looking for one like your car has.

Good luck.

adding $0.02 worth.

FWIW, I have a MY95 US car with a 1/94 Mfg. Date. Last four of the VIN is 0221.

The VIN decodes to a US MY95 although alot of third party systems pick up on the 1/94 mfg. date and try to brand it a '94...

Car is definately US as I have all records (or so I think) since new. Other than not having the steering rack brace, everything else has been status quo.

Enjoy your new purchase !

Regards

Just as a matter of interest, my car must be one of the earliest, German '94 model, built Oct. '93.
I've just noticed that US cars don't have the side indicators!

My car was Australian delivered, factory Right Hand Drive, and it has ZZZ as the 4th 5th & 6th letters in the VIN...

It has a build date of 8/94 and has the side markers you describe, but all Aussie 993's do.

But when I checked out the option codes I remember C23 being Australian model.

Thanks for the VIN code advise.

The 4th,5th, 6th codes are AA2 , so definately not US..

Last 4 digits 1054.
