Defroster...Pathetic or broken or both ?

Defroster...Pathetic or broken or both ?
Today, I got caught with my car out in the cold rain. Had the beatie at work so she had to sit outside and get rained on. At the end of the day, things were dry indise, but I never had a situation until then where I truly needed the defroster to get going. Until today I never gave it much thought as my early 911 will just about melt the windows in a darn hurry. However with the 993 today it took alomost 5 minutes to get real heat going out the dash vents and the fan was not as powerful as when the car is running the A/C.
I closed all other vents and used the defrost "button" on the heater controls. It seems to put the fan on "4" and maybe cuases a little more air out the dash vents, but overall it was darn sad... Granted, there may have been a lot of condensation collected in all of the cold HVAC ducting running to the back of the car, but it seemed pretty poor for a "air-cooled"(oil) car.
From the sound of it, do I have a heater control problem ? Functions seems to work and make a difference. Other issue ? Or, is the 993 too complicated a system compared to the older cars and really is not as good ?
Once going the car was toastie after about 10 - 15 minutes.
TIA for any help.

Jim, just for a point of reference since I'm close by to you, my defrost works really well...both the front windows and the rear grid. I too had my car outside today and my defroster worked good and quick. Maybe you should have yours checked out at Stead or somewhere else.

Thanks for the quick responses.
yeah, I too think its got a problem. Damn, I hate spending money on the non-go-fast stuff.
I can only imagine the labor $$$ to track this down. Maybe something simple, like a heater fan resistor pack, but I doubt it.
Again thanks

Hi Jim,
Try looking up some of the recent threads on HVAC (heater/AC) operation. I think you'll find plenty of information to at least do basic troubleshooting of your system. For example:
<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=006090" target="_blank">HVAC Thread</a>
Some immediate thoughts:
-My car starts blowing warm air before I've even made it a block from the house. Amazing. Same heating system as your own, with minor differences.
-The defroster is very effective.
-Your servo for the defroster may not be repositioning, so no air is getting directed to the windshield.
-Your A/C compressor may not be running to dehumidify the air. On my old '66, it seemed to take forever before the heat-exhangers were hot enough to provide dry air to clear the windshield. In the meantime, the defrost vents--blowing moisture that had accumulated in the heating pipes--actually made things worse.
Best of luck!

Jim,
Did you turn on your A/C? Like Randall G. mentions, it’s important to use it, as it dries out the air. BTW, this works in all cars, not just air cooled ones. The A/C is better for defrosting than heat.
