I bought a 95 with 110,000 miles, bodywork okay few scratches, oil leaks and interior okay. I decided to drop engine and then decided to rebuild as there was oil leaks all over.
When we stripped down pistons, bores looked like new, replaced rings seals. The heads were pretty "chocked up" and seals leaked. Had heads rebuilt and head re builder said that all of these air cooled heads 40,000, 70,000- 100,000 miles look the same to him. Age,oils, and fuel used and or lack of use basically create the same issues.
Im re painting the car and putting new interior, new suspension and car will be good for another 100,000 miles.
So if you are going to drive it hard and fast, buy one that has good body and interior and has had a lot of service work or needs engine dropped and gone over. Then you will know that it is okay
