Question Clocking the Speedo

I'll soon be exporting my car from the UK to Australia and in preparation I have managed to get my hands on a speedo in KMH to replace the MPH unit.

I spoke to my OPC about getting them to change the odometer to read in klicks what I now have in miles - if you follow me, and they can't or won't do it.

I've managed to get the speedo apart but am not sure where to go from here, and my question is has anyone done this before?

I'm not trying to con anyone as I will be increasing the mileage or kilometerage and getting the OPC to swap them and record it in my log book.

I know I could leave it as is but would prefer if possible for the speedo to be correct.

Why don't you try to speak to some independents like JZ Machtech and see what they advise? Surely someoe should be able to do this and certify in writing that the odometer has been adjusted?

Where abouts in Australia is it coming to?

Have you thought of buying a speedo from an Australian delivered car when you get it here or have someone install it for you?

Also, what about the trip computer, does it read in miles or km?

Aussie Alan

PS I can make a few calls for you if you like...

Sorry, on reading it again I realise I misunderstood the original problem.

I still ask about the trip computer though.

Thanks Guys,

Perhaps this one touches on the border of 'illegal' and those in the know don't want to let on they know - at least not in public.

If you know how to do this and and are willing to help out a fellow Porsheaphile please drop me a line at gregandmaureen@figh.fsnet.co.uk

TIA

Did you get a second-hand one with more mileage? I can see that this will cause an issue. How do the dealers know that you will not put it in another car after it has been put in. Perhaps if you bought a brand new one from the dealer they may be a little bit more receptive. If you are leaving the UK for good, perhaps surrendering the old speedo may work if worse comes to worse (this would mean you won't be able to put it up on the e-Bay and get back some money).

Greg, let me tell you a little story.

I owned an Honda Accord with 220,000 klicks on the clock before it was stolen.

We were paid out, it was recovered and sold at auction, bla bla bla...

I recently saw it for sale on the side of the road and stopped for a nostalgic look. I noticed the speedo had been wound back to 134,000 km

I can prove the old reading through service books and roadworthy certs, yet the Road and Traffic Authority, the Department of Fair Trading or the Cops were not interested all passing the buck on to one another in a nice big circle.

I did not go out of my way to tell on this guy, I was transfering the rego on my Porsche at the time and decided to ask about it.

The point is, NO ONE WAS INTERESTED and I had proof of the dirty deed.

If you have a lower reading on your speedo than the car has actually done, big deal.

No body will care, even if you register it with 000000km I'll bet.

Aussie Alan on cars going to Oz....

I am presently on a very short list (of one) to be transferred to OZ. Location most likely Sydney. So far that is excellent news. Bad news for my 95 993 and 87 911 both LHD , US registered. Is there any hope of bringing the kids or do I have to put them up for adoption ? Will NSW accept a LHD and what duties will I have to pay ?

Any info would be great and or a web site with specifics.

Thanks.

try North Hollywood Speedometer: http://www.nhspeedometer.com/ or Palo Alto Speedometer: http://www.paspeedo.com/

I am sure they would do the adjustment to your km speedometer, and provide you with documentation of the work done.

Normally changing the speedometer is something that needs to be certified by an OPC. As far as I remember there is a section in the service booklet for the car that has to be signed and stamped by the OPC if the odometer/speedo is changed. You need to be careful here as it could impact the resale value if not properly certified.
