Is this just a chromate finish?
Whatever the factory did.....it's untouched other than adding some Gibb's Oil every now and then....

yeah for mine, on my 89 carrera, that was a brand new factory fan we vapor blasted it and that's what the natural metal finish looked like, not even/painted look. I think it's cool and we just sealed it in with clear.

I have no idea what a 993 fan would look like with the same process. Pretty sure they are painted or coated in some way from the factory as mine had a little chipping. So, a PVD type coating in the factory finish would be fine and give you that natural aluminum type look

I know that the fan is magnesium; but, I thought that the fan *housing* was aluminum alloy. Is it true that the housing is also magnesium?

The housing on my 1990 964 is magnesium. My fan is new, and is also mag under that silver paint.

Yes the shroud is also magnesium. A friend dropped his and knocked a corner off, he was lucky to find a welding magician who fixed it. We both used POR15 detail cast iron paint after vapour blast and primer. No photo but still looks good after 2 yrs all weather use.

Thanks for the input all and for the steer towards the original coating being Chromate.

I have found a local magnesium specialist who can re-chromate for me. He said due to some changes in the chemical process due to legislation over the years, it is possible the finish may be a different tone to that produced 20 years ago. I said so long as it is flat grey I am happy. Once done he suggested locking it in with satin clear coat to preserve.

That looks superb

Cerakote seems to be much harder to find in the UK.
