Default cracked windshield

I noticed this morning about a 5" crack
in my windshield. I did not get
hit by a rock or nuthin (JimBob)
but could this be a result of
windshield creaking??

OG,
Look really close, I once did not think I had damage around a crack until the installer showed me a tiny little nick, I was amazed at how little it took.

It had to be just the right kind of hit.

I agree with Pete, but if there is no sign of any inpact damage, have you had the car on a jack recently?

I'm not talking a hoist that takes the weight of the car on four points, I mean a single point jack.

Also, is it the original glass?

Its not the most likely cause but it may be a factor.

Is it the original glass?

Do you have windscreen coverage on your insurance. I am getting this on my next renewal at the end of January. If my front screen breaks I get a new one without loss of no claim bonus or any excess.

How were the donuts?

I had a similar occurrence on one of my other vehicles recently... one day glass was fine next day glass had a long crack in it. No impact anywhere, as a matter of fact the crack started at the edge of the glass, under the moulding.

When the installer removed the glass, there was a small rust spot where water had leaked under the moulding. The rust spot caused enough stress to finally make the glass crack.

I'll have to look into the glass replacement coverage... so far this year I've replaced two windshields. And I put my deductible high so neither one was covered. Ouch.

OG,

If I remember correctly, there are some horror stories on this or the 993 TT board about crappy windshield installations. Do a search and see if you can avoid some of those experiences. Sorry about the windshield. Duct tape?

OG,

First you clutch, now this, you may want to do another PPI on your baby.

OG,

You may want to check with your agent about using your insurance for windshield replacement. I had my windshield replaced, but realized after a modest deductible and insurance paying $500.00 - that even for a small claim, it is considered as a "mark" against my clean insurance record. So, for another claim, whether minor, or major, and/or traffic infraction, my rates would likely increase, or perhaps insurance would be dropped after second more severe claim.

It is almost like oil discussion, no one answer for everyone - one view is I pay so much for insurance and that is reason for insurance, other is whether a small claim is worth submitting. Perhaps your insurance does not count one claim, or one moving violation against your record.

Just FWIW.

Darn Paul...

You are just not having good luck out there in the middle of ... actually I think you have to drive to get to nowhere. Good luck with the windshield.

I have a couple of star cracks on mine, that I was hoping would expand a little to get the windshield replaced. If not, the windshield places are known for stretching the truth a little at dealing with insurance companies...

Bob, just press on the star crack with your thumb, they grow as big as you want them to.

What is the approx cost of a front glass replacement in the USA?

Alan
