Default Street temps

Driving in stop and go traffic, or just idling for 10 min or so, what temp do you see?

Fans are working and all, just seeing it get warmer than I would have thought. By maybe I'm wrong. Hence the Q.

My gauge sits a 1/3 guage and can rise up to half gauge in hot weather.
More importantly is that the oil pressure gauge drifts down and hovers around 2 bar +/- when very warm.
What do you consider hot? And what does your pressure gauge indicate?

By 1/3 and 1/2, you mean sort of 7:30/8:00 and 9:00 respectively?

Ah...what do i consider hot...that's what I want to see. I'm just sort of obsessively checking my oil cooling operation as I'm waiting for the aux cooler.

Tell us about the aux cooler! An does a 993 really need that if everything is working as it should?

Not if only on the street. But I track it too.

Mine is the same.
Coming back to NYC from Hershey on Saturday while stuck in 20 minutes of very heavy traffic heading to the Lincoln Tunnel my gauge was creeping towards 9:00.

Yes,
Remember the gauge is not exactly a precision instrument.

If you use an OBDC Reader that can show running data I believe running temperature is one of the items that can be captured in a graph.

Creeping? Sitting and idling in about 72 degree weather it was a hair past 9:00. If I rev more, both speed of fans do come on.

JPS - In stop and go traffic, temp gauge should be just above 9:00 before the low speed fan kicks in. This is roughly 230F. Sounds like what you are seeing is normal. The car is going too slow to move any air over the cooler and ambient temp too warm for the cooler to be effective without airflow.

Ok. Thx. I read about some people staying cooler (no pun intended) but maybe that was at speed.

It basically stayed just below fan coming on.

FWIW, I notice that the cars appear to run hotter in the shoulder seasons... totally subjective but I obsess over the temp gauges on the first warm day in traffic, and in the fall... but I never worry about it in the summer. From my experience what you're seeing is totally normal.

When I first got my 1997 993 Cab it would occasionally run hot; 9 to 10 o'clock position. Usually in traffic or mountain driving. Looking back I would guess that one or both of the fans resistors were out. I installed a fan override switch and it was great. No matter how or where the car was driven and no matter how hot it was outside the gauge would only read a tad over 8 o'clock with the override switch on. I have already bought a switch for the '95 cab. It is an easy DIY mod and a nice option to have.

I have one too and do use it in traffic, but making sure I'm not masking any other probs.

I just rebuilt the engine so just trying to make sure everything else is in tip top to support it while i wait for the aux cooler.

I live in Southern California, where outside temps can reach over 105*F in the summer. During especially hot days in stop and go traffic, the highest temp I've ever seen in my 993 was the gauge just barely reaching the 9 o'clock position, with idle oil pressures between 2-3 bar.

It's never gone above the 9 o'clock position, regardless of outside temperatures or driving conditions.

On an average 75* temperature day with driving that's not stop and go, but is instead a mix of cruising/highway speeds, the temp gauge will usually be just a couple needle widths into the normal warm temp range (maybe about the 8 o'clock position), with idle oil pressures generally near to the 3 bar point.

Temps where I live get in the 100°-112°ish and further at times. This can be from May thru October. Not a ton of stop and go, but I never really get to “9 o-clock” on the gauge, without trying. When I do an oil change, I gotta really work (higher revs at lower speeds) at getting temps up, to see exactly where I’m at. Only have TTS cooler. What I do, is regularly spray out intakes to oil,ac cooler areas. Assure they’re always free of debris.
