Cool Obsession with acceleration times?

Some members seem to be really obsessed with acceleration time figures. Well, I read an article on an RS 2.7 Carrera accelerating better than all the recent NA Porsches. A 30 year old car beating all the newer models, including 964 RS, 993 RS, 996 GT3? Yes. "Can't be", you will say, must have been modified. That's right. Did they up the hp to 300 by putting in a 2.8 RSR engine? Nope, just simply by SHORTENING the gear ratios. Just that easy. When comparison figures on racing circuits are done with standard cars, the gearing of some cars will give them a special advantage. For this reason, for example, it appears that the tuner Ruf prefers Nurbrgring but avoids Hockenheim for his cars. In race cars, you adapt the car gears to the particular circuit for the best results.

If you want to do the Gear Change "Right", consider ordering the 993RS transmission from Gert at Carnewal Parts Express. He can sell you a new tranny for about $8,000, used, based on availability for less. Of course the used trannys have NOT BEEN subject to any hard driving, nawwww. I do have a friend who got a used tranny from Gert and it has been flawless.

You can get a Ring and Pinion set up from ANDIAL, figure $1,500 for the gear set, and 10 to 20 hours to get it installed correctly..about $3,000 in SoCal as I calculate things. Of course you still don't have a close ratio transmission, but you do have a lower final ratio, about a 14% improvement as I recall.

Me, I am saving my pennies for the new tranny from Gert....whoops, I forgot to add, you may need a RS clutch and lightened flywheel. That WRX is looking better all the time!

Guys a much much cheaper and worthwhile alternative is to just call PAUL GUARD and buy a new 4 new gears.

All you really need in any 993 for better acceleration is a new 993RSCS G50-21 ~basically its 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears........ and move your USA/ROW 5th gear to 6th slot or buy a Supercup 6th.

While youre at it buy some steel synchros and a better fork......and after that you basically now have created a 993RSCS = Supercup 3.8L gearbox. Gears range from $700- $895 each and you therefore save yourself about $5000 plus airfreight.

If anyone needs an ultimate gearbox technitian.......just email me and Ill turn you onto 2 of the very best honest "fast" guys in the USA to get the job done by the experts.
