Yep, most people don't have them on. They were apparently put there as a sound dampener for both U.S. an Swiss decibel restrictions. Your car should run slightly cooler.

Many loooong threads on this in the past. Consensus seems to be it's primary purpose was to meet some gov't sound limits, most here take it off, w/the pros & cons:

Reasons to leave the cover ON
- decreases engine noise
- provides some physical damage/dirt protection
- keeps oil leakage off your garage floor
- engine reaches operating temp faster

Reasons to take the cover OFF
- reduces cylinder head temperatures
- increases engine music
- oil leakage is more detectable
- weight reduction (esp at the rear of the car)
- Steve W said so.

Did I miss anything?

Mine goes on/off w/my winter tires. I have noticably faster cold temp engine (& heater) warmup w/the cover on which is desirable when it's cold outside.

Yes, another reason is that w/o the cover you can use a floor jack to lift the car...

Evan:

Take the cover off and leave it off.

Your car and your checking account will be the better for it.

Seems like a horrible idea to keep the heat in like that but I notice there is a wire to the oxygen sensor. Do you do anything to protect the wire or the sensor?

O2 sensors are designed to mount into a hot exhaust-the mfgr knows it is harsh duty. The wire to the O2 sensor is clipped to engine mount/body along its path- it doesn't care if there is a cover on or not.

I was really talking about it being exposed to the elements, Ed like running over fragmented tires and other road debris. Is there a spot to attach it to keep it safe?

If installed correctly, there is nothing to catch debris.

Great! I'm going to have them do that when I get my oil changed.

Is there any noticeable increase in noise, Ed?

Access from the back of the car underside. 5 screws. Quick turn each with a philips screwdriver. Jack one side of the car up. Slip out the cover. Done.
