Post Fuel Pump

OK. My car is again making the humming sound. Based on some previous threads in the archives, I listened out side the car. Definitely it is coming from the passenger side fender, so I have concluded that it is the auxillary fuel pump working. Does this mean the main pump is bad? This happened once before for a week or so, then stopped. Probably one year ago.

Might it just be the oil cooler fan?

I have this in my 964. The best way to confirm the source is to pull the fuel pump fuse while the car is running. If the hum stops, its the fuel pump.

Don't pull it for too long, or the car will stall BTW!!

And if it is the auxillary fuel pump running, does this mean that I need to replace the main pump? I suppose I should check the oil cooler fan also.

You might check when the fuel filter was last replaced. A clogged filter can cause the fuel pump to make noise. Regards, Roy
