125. I don't think I could cope with higher speeds without a lot of practice at that level (and a very wide track!). The car didn't feel that stable, with some vibrations appearing to come from the rear (I'll get the rear wheels balanced just in case). The tracking has been done and the tyres are about 400 miles old (street use).

140 indicated between Cincy and Indianapolis. Son was in the car with me, and he was chatting along as he is wont to do. That kid could talk your ear off, and he was doing his best that day. As I'm listening through some detailed explanation of something real important to him, I notice that there's no traffic on my side, and nothing on the other side either. Also, the road is straight and flat, visibility is incredible. I push the pedal gently to the floor and wait for my son to notice.... and.... and.... nothing. We hit 140 and he's still yakking away. I noticed a car coming in the other direction and I gently eased off. Once back at about 80mph, my son's still going to town on his story, and I asked him if he noticed anything unusual in the last few minutes. Not a thing he answered, and then I asked him if he noticed how fast we were going, and after a quick glance at the speedo, he said "80 or so". I chuckled because he missed the whole thing.
BTW, the car felt quite stable, and obviously not too harsh as my passenger didn't notice a thing.

Coming back to Nashville in my 96 993 Carrera 2 cab (top up) from the Dixie Tech meeting in Huntsville, AL on a Sunday morning about 7am. Interstate 65 North was totally deserted, beautiful sunny day. My friend who owns a 944 Turbo S chose to ride with me for the weekend.
I had never had it over 160 mph, so we decide to go for it. He watches the speedo and rpm's and I keep my eyes on the &*%$ road. We hit 160, felt great. We hit 170, still felt great, but a little light up front. When I finally gave up the ghost the speedo registered 181 mph at about 6100-6200 rpm's, still had about 500 rpm's left.
I know a 993 Carrera 2 cab is not supposed to go that fast, and the gears probably should not even get you there, but man it was fun and to know the car would pull that strong up to the end. I did have to finally shift into sixth at some point to go any faster, and what surprised me was that it still pulled in that high gear!!
My guess is that I was going VERY fast, but that the speedo was probably off by 10-15 mph. Regardless, I felt like I was going 181 mph!!! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
Cheers!!

A bunch of us in a convoy from the bay area up
to the SCCA Thunderhill raceway tried a high
speed run on I-505 ...
I was leading the way in my 1998 993 C2S with
a 3.8L engine upgrade, RS Flywheel, RS suspension
and TT brakes, riding on 993 RS wheels with
BFG GFrocr R1's, my speedo indicated 175 before I
started to slow down for traffic ...
The F360, Z06, and Viper RT-10 also "in tow"
all indicated similar terminal speeds +/- 5mph

ahhhh you guys in europe and the US are lucky....
(or in other parts of australia)
in sydney, we dont get many wide open roads except for a couple of runs....
one goes for about 10kms and is a great freeway thru the city kind of run (no cops, one part of it is about 15 lanes wide....)
and the other, a massive 30?km run going out west....nearly perfectly straght and flat...leads to the drags....plenty of cops if they can catch you....
not too many places to get much above 200km/h....roads are too windy, poor visibility (hilly, windy), or too much traffic...
my bike is a different story....

120 my first time on the track at Sebring. Back straight in 5th with some firm braking into turn 17. Maybe a little quicker next time now that I'm a bit more confident. Felt stable.

Three Wheelin'
I've seen 170 mph on the speedometer once. Question...the published (in the owner's manual) top speed of my '97 coupe is 171 mph. Is this actual speed or speedometer indicated speed? I still kick myself for NOT continuing above 170 mph (indicated) to reach "top speed".

J959 - sounds like you don't get too many speed traps your side. A couple of years ago, I spent a month in Perth (WA) and there were mobile speed traps everywhere. It was a terrible, you couldn't concentrate on driving properly, you were forever checking your speedo because of the the constantly changing and very low speed limits. The police even admitted publicly that it was for raising revenue!

On one of my last runs for this season, I peaked at 170 mph (over 270 km/h), heard a noise in the back and saw my third light spoiler cover swirl up in the air. Stop the car, put it back on, just a few scratches.
Then, starting up again, just when I was at legal speeds, I see 2 police cars lurking behind some corner! Lucky me.
I'd like to think my 993 saved me from a very complicated end of season.
Or maybe, just maybe, 993 gods were telling me to get one with a fixed wing...

I recently sold my 1990 C4 and upgraded to a 1996 C2. I haven't tested the top end of the 993, and probably won't, but I did take the C4 up to an indicated 163 mph when it was still in 'stock' condition. I benchmarked that speedo to be 2% optimistic, so call it just under 160 mph true - but it was still accelerating too.
The car felt very stable until 150 mph, but seemed to be asking for a lot more concentration after that point. And at 163, the rev limiter in the passenger seat (wife) began going "OK, OK, OK!" so I backed it down.

Back in 1995 I was stationed in Italy and driving a Lancia Thema 6V and when I had the initial inspection (for license plates) done on the car the mechanic said the car would do every bit of 250 kph (150 mph). I was very skeptical, but a few weeks later on the autostrada between Rome and Naples with no one else around, I opened it up to see what it would do. At 225 kph/140 mph I started getting very nervous and I backed back down to 120 mph for the rest of the way home.
That car could have done a little more, but it just wasn't very aerodynamic and really not very safe at those speeds, although it would do 120 mph all day long with no trouble. At the time I thought that was pretty decent for a four door sedan.
