Looking at a 95 993.
Local dealer is selling a nice looking 95 993 coupe 6 speed with 61k on the clock.
Some mods - Turbo front fascia and rear tail, intake, exhaust and coil overs. 5 owners. No records of plugs or clutch replacement.
Interior looks great.
A small oil oil leak - 1-2 drops over 2 weeks. A bit of paint work, but “no accidents” and clean Carfax. One concern is front hood was painted and the missing options sticker. Other than an accident/replacement, why would it be missing?
Dealer wants $52k.

Right off the bat, $52K is high for a car with body work. Could the hood have been painted due to stone chips? I’d be suspicious.
The coilovers are a typical/necessary upgrade on these cars and is welcome. Turbo front is nice cosmetic upgrade (but was it put on because of an accident?). Exhaust is a matter of taste - make sure it doesn’t drone at speed.
These cars are usually “moist” but actual oil drops makes me nervous. Now I’m curious, how do you confirm that a car that’s in a dealer’s lot is dripping oil at a rate of one drip per week? Are you monitoring that? Seems like a hard thing to pin down for sure with a car in a dealer’s lot. There are some known weak spots for oil leaks that can be addresses for reasonable money further investigation required (I wouldn’t necessarily rule a car out because of this).
I believe you can find an enthusiast owned and maintained car that hasn’t had paintwork for similar money.
Definitely get a PPI!! Good luck.

I’m thinking the same things.
They told me about oil drips.
I’m going to take another look at it today. To me it seems like a good driver. But they’re asking above average price. They started at a $59k price. It’s at a Porsche dealership for reference.
PPI for sure if I get serious.

Just a FYI ... Porsche Classic told me that " not all cars had their Option Hood Stickers installed." Sometimes they forgot to put them on at the Dealership. So this is not a 100% indication of Re-Spray or Replacement of the Hood.
Sounds like a well loved and used example. My belief is if a Rennlist member who knows how a 993 should feel and drive, drives it around a corner for you the will know immediatly if issues are present that would be show stoppers. Price/value, in the eye of the beholder. Clearly the car is a driver not a collector car and if you like the modifications it's a plus. Is there a 993 Rennlist owner in your area?
On the other side of the coin, I looked at a car in WA that had original paint and it was a mess on the front of the car. I found it hard to imagine it selling for what the owner wanted but each to his own. I have original paint on my mirrors and they need to be painted as does my rear bumper cover. My front bumper cover was already painted by the PO. People want original paint until they see original paint. If it was painted, why was it painted and how well was it painted? These cars are coming up to a quarter-century old and they have low fronts and people drive them.
Just another reason why the sticker may not mean anything on our cars concerning originality.

Well that's a point in their favor. But now I'm curious whether the under tray covers are missing. Hard for a small leak to reach the floor with them in place. You might want to check. I know a lot of owners take them off - and would not be surprising here given the other mods to this car, but that doesn't mean all parts shouldn't be included in a top dollar car. Or used as a negotiating point. IMO.
I'll take a closer look at it today to see if I can tell if the hood was replaced. If it was, then it's safe to assume it was in an accident. That being said, I may not have a problem with the car overall. I just wouldn't want to pay a premium for a good driver, with paint/accident history, limited service records and some required engine work.
I know they're eager to sell it. I'll report back.
Thanks all.

Most 993 owners are aware of the desirability of the sticker's presence. That is why when I had my hood replaced for a minor collision I had the body shop transfer the sticker to the replacement hood.

Haven’t made it to the dealer yet, but the sales manager called me.
Asked what he needs to do to close the deal. “The cars been in their lot longer thank expected and Black Friday coming up”
I shared my concerns and how it’s priced. He asked me to make an offer.
I may wait until the holiday to throw out a number.
Based on the information I’ve shared, what do you think? I’m thinking $47k.

has it had topend rebuild yet? if not it probably will need it soon based on other 993s experiences. I think this car is 40k car at this time of year, and based on the weak market now. Will you do a ppi? If it is a Porsche dealer they should be able to tell you where it is leaking. It may be the timing belt cover at the side of the engine or valve covers.
Regarding moving the sticker, most owners and shops up until a few years ago would not think of this. What is the color combo and options?
btw a guy named Matt is selling my old 95 coupe with 120k and original paint, well sorted car (sport seats and LSD) for 42k but located now in Alaska. car is in vehicles for sale section.

If its at a Porsche dealer. Tell them to fix the oil leak. To be honest, that kinda tells me they didn't do much to this car. Get a PPI from another source. Seems like the dealer is trying to pass the buck. Have they done any service work while its been in their possession ?
