Post 993 Carrera RS Seats?

Does anyone know if the 993RS seats are Recaro Pole Positions just upolstered in leather rather than fabric? From the photo's I've seen they certainly look the same.

Also are they the same as the seats in the 94' 964 Speedster?

TIA

Yes, as far as I know the 964RS, 993RS, 964 Speedster and OEM Recaro Pole Position are all the same seat with the Porsche versions coming in leather multi-color panels.

Porsche installed RECARO SPG seats and had them trimmed in leather or left the black fabric.

No, they were Pole Positions as the others indicated.

Viken, the pic at the bottom is an SPA (Carbon Kevlar version of the SPG seat) which differs a little (SPG does not have a split seat cushion, has smaller arcs of non-slip material on the shoulder supports, and the sides of the seat do not come up nearly as high beside your legs).

I agree the Porsche seats look like Pole Position shells. Besides the SPG being narrower by approx 40mm it has more support at the sides of your torso.

Edit: I seem to recall that the club sport spec 993 (RSR? RSCS?) came with standard fabric-covered SPG's, but the RS (and RSR?) road cars had leather-covered seats that look like Pole Position shells.

JF:

The RS seats are the same as the Pole Position seats except they are covered in leather and the shells are painted to match the body color except in the case of metallic colored cars. They are also the identical seats that came in the 964 Speedster. If you are looking for a set of OEM RS seats, contact Corey Jump at planet 911. I have a set of these seats and they are nice seats to sit in. They are not easy to get into or out of nor are they particularly supportive on the track with regular seatbelts. I am sure that they would be great with proper five or six point harnesses.

Hank:

Thanks for your reply, I didn't know about the color of the seat backs with metallic colored RS's. My car is silver so I should keep the seat backs black for originality?

Thanks,

JF

The Porsche RS seats supplied by Recaro are NOT identical to the aftermarket Pole position Recaro seat. The Porsche seat is slightly narrower (midway in width between an SPG and Pole position) and has an "X" shaped bracing pattern formed into the fiberglas back of the seat. The back of a Pole position is smooth and does not have the "X" cast into it. They are similar but different seats.

All factory Porsche 911RS cars (specifically the 964 and 993 models race & street versions) had RECARO SPG seats that were covered in fabric or leather.

Porsche AG exclusively used RECARO SPG seats in all the Carrera CUP cars starting in 1990 and Porsche also exclusively installed SPGs in the 964RS ROW, 964 Speedster, and lastly the 993RS and 993 GT2 CS cars. These were trimmed in leather or fabric depending and painted to match on back on application and customer preference.

There was no RECARO pole position seats factory installed by Porsche AG during any of these periods. Pole positions were a very very late 1990s new seat offered by RECARO to their dealers for "wider- heavier" people so they could be more comfortable. The SPG is narrow and the Pole position was much more generous in terms of width.

I have RECARO SPGs in my 993 and they are very comfortable and lightweight........but very tight if you ever have a driving suit on or a leather jacket and its wintertime. Forget about wearing a shearling coat or anything heavy.....I am 220lbs and 6'3" and in pretty tight.
Have a great day.

Yes, of course they are not identical but the Pole Position is as close as one can get to the original 964 RS, 964 Speedster and 993 RS seats. Especially, given the fact that the factory has become reluctant to supply them. However, it was my understanding that the factory seats were available in three different width to accommodate most people. Is this not true?

I bought the Porsche RS leather seats for my car and have sat in all three Recaro seats described below, as well as the later GT3 seat, at the Paris and the Frankfurt auto shows.

The leather Porsche Recaro RS seat as supplied by Porsche for the street RS is only available from Porsche and is intermediate in width between the SPG and Pole Position Recaro seat. So, in a way, the Recaro seats are available in three widths, one from Porsche, two from Recaro.

Porsche offered only two of the widths, their proprietary intermediate width RS/Speedster Leather seat for the street RS cars or the narrower SPG seat in the the racing and Clubsport variants.

The widest Pole positon seat was not supplied by Porsche for any of their models.

Cupcar is right. The true RS seats are not the Poles and they have this type of cross bracing on the back. Here is a pic:

The Cargraphic catalog lists all 3 seats (RS seats available in cloth as well as diff leather colors). I inquired about prices for the leather ones some time ago and recall that they were slightly less expensive than GT3 seats, but not by very much.

You can get all seats the SPG, Pole Position, GT3 and the RS seat from FVD in germany.
http://www.fvd.de/
the RS seat is about 950 euros in black leather and 380 euros in black cloth.

they have the GT3 seat for 1430 euros in leather.
