You use a program like photoshop, Roxio photosuite, Paint shop pro... and pick Image size and enter the # of pixels you want (while keeping the proportions correct - there should be a checkbox for that). If you cannot, send it to me and tell me what size you want it at...

When resizing downward for avatars, specify about 160 pixels in the horizontal dimension and let the vertical auto-adjust to maintain aspect ratio. The new, smaller avatar image should the be sharpened via unsharp masking to make it "snap"...

Download the program Irfanview- it's very good as an image viewer. You can resize (if desired. Image - Resize). To change the file size, you just click Save-As, then under Options, just change the Save Quality (scale of 1 to 100). Very easy!!

Edit: like most other good shareware, you can download it from http://downloads-zdnet.com.com

Why not just stand farther away when you take your picture, then crop???
