Cool High speed street driving

1993 c2 993 cab owner. 62K kms (39 k miles) on the car.

Kinda new owner. Took the car for my first high speed spin on a open highway. Managed to hit 200 kmph (125 mph) till traffic slowed me down.

Q. At about 180 kmph (111 mph) in 6th gear, the RPM was about 4000. The cars top speed is said to be 280 kmph. Can the remaining 2000 in the RPM move the car upto a top speed of 280 kmph ????

The front of my car feels kinda loose and not glued to the road. The steering feels kinda loose. Is this normal for a 993 cab. The porsche mechanic says thats kinda normal for a 911, but then I think I feel more secure in a BMW at that speed as the steering is more stiff. Any pointers.

Are the aerodynamics of a cab much different from a coupe? Does the coupe handle better than the cab? Is there a difference in handling with top up?

BTW... my alignments ok.. just got it done.

Cheers

I tried mine at 125mph and I found that it really stuck to the road with confidence. Made me feel like I could have comfortably taken it to 160.

I have 18" but I think 17" should do the same. Oh and my wheels do need an alignment.

I dont see why the cab should be any different.

A. Speed and RPM in any given gear is a linear function, therefore, assuming your numbers are right (mine are different), you would get 45 km/h per 1000 RPM. If your red zone is 6500 RPM, you get 6.5 times 45 = 292.5. You can get the real numbers in your user manual. Hope this answers your question

yes - 180/4000*6000 = 270kmph and I think you'll find your red line is higher than 6000rpm.

About the car feeling loose at the front - I find my car feels pretty glued 95pct of the time at speed but when it gets a little bumpy the front does get a little light - just the physics of not having an engine over the front wheels.

This past weekend at Willow Springs Raceway in CA, I checked out the speedo in 4th Gear, and at Red Line. The speed was 130 mph. This means I would have 5th and 6th gear to reach 170 mph. I'll never know because I am not going there...I am at California Speedway in May with the PCA. In the banking and the straight I am certain I will see greater than 130 mph...that should be interesting!

Good show, Martin. If you got 130 on the front straight, you're getting a good run out of turn nine. In my car, the rev limiter kicked in at 131 mph in fourth gear. Don't shift up to fifth before turn one, just let it touch the limiter once or twice.

Fontana should be fun.

I used to get very close to the rev limiter there too.
